Kitty Surgery

I'm a wreck.  My kitty is having surgery at 1:30 today.  It's an
exploratory surgery to see what's going on.  She's been throwing up and
having diarreha (sp?) for awhile.  It started off not too bad but the
vet recommended I have xrays to find out if there was an obstruction.
This is after I changed her food to find out if it was food-related.
The xrays came back showing a HUGE amount of gas.  We also had blood
work but all that came back normal.

While the xrays were sent to the radiologist, the vet gave her a depo
shot and sent me home with predisone.  I have her the pills and she
seemed good for about a week.  She was gaining weight and bouncing
around like normal.  The vet called yesterday to tell me the vet saw
some suspicious shadows but wasn't certain as to what they were.  I had
an appointment today anyway for a recheck, so I thought I'd discuss
these findings with the vet then.

This morning I awoke to my little girl vomiting and having a horrible
amount of diarreha.  She vomited probably four times and at the end it
was just foamy.  I rushed her into the vet and they will be doing an
exploratory surgery to find out what's going on in there.

I'm so worried.  I worry that she won't be coming home.  Has anyone
ever had this problem?  I feel so lost.

Sending heartfelt purrs for your kitty and you.  May you have a good
outcome.   MLB

It could be so many things. Please keep us posted. I know how awful this
situation is :(

Sounds so familiar; possible IBD. My Shadow had everything but
exploratory surgery to diagnose it. He did have a biopsy of the
intestine, but it was done via endoscopy.  Steroids do help with
this, diet can help, and palliative care is sometimes the only
thing you can do if nothing else helps. Shadow lived for two years
after his diagnosis. He never did get rid of the diarrhea but he
wasn't nauseaus and lethargic all the time after the steroids were
started.  Purrs..........

Tnx to everyone who prayed for my kitty.  Turns out she has IBD.  And a
raging case of it.  They took a biopsy of the intestine and liver.  The
vet is consulting a specialist for drugs considering she wasn't
responding to the predisone.

Can you tell me what palliative care is??

I'm so sorry. Palliative care means keeping kitty comfortable. For
my IBD kitty it meant keeping his bottom shaved so the diarrhea
didn't cake up in his fur so he didn't feel like he had to lick
himself all the time. It also meant keeping drugs on hand to help
with nausea when he had it -- metronidazole was what we used. Also
called Flagyl. Also used Pepcid and Zantac (switched when one
didn't work anymore, then switch back when the second didn't work
anymore)

You might want to join the yahoo group Feline IBD. Many there have
had good luck by changing the diet. Some use a raw diet because it
is closer to the natural diet of a cat, but I was hesitant because
Shadow was also FeLV+ and prone to infection. Give it a shot.

All good suggestions. Seems like they have a handle on the case. It's
good that the CBC was normal. You did say that right? With cats
sometimes bad IBD can become lymphoma which shows up on the CBC. That
happened to my Nico (the wonder cat).

I didn't put Nico on the raw diet but did try that for Jackie, who
came along later and also had IBD. It did seem to be helping her but
she developed a tumor that did her in.

If you try raw, I found that Nature's Menu was good
(http://www.naturesmenu.com/site/493564/product/Raw%20Diet%204).
Luckily there was a place near me that sells it. Lots of folks on the
Yahoo Kiddy-IBD group want all grains out of the food and this has no
grains. I wasn't up for grinding the stuff myself.

My vet was not a fan of raw diets, although he was current on other
stuff. I ignored him on this one and I think I was right.

Good luck. Many members of my family (human) have various forms of IBD
so when Nico got it we just figured that he was part of the brood.

Thanks Cheryl - I just joined the group.  WOW!  Lots of info there!
Thanks.

I just want to say that I am soooo relieved. As rotten as IBD is, I was a
bit worried because with my boy it turned out to be very advanced stomach
cancer. I didn't want to worry you unnecessarily. My boy never came home :(
There are some specific yahoo groups I know that people will point you at.

I just found out that my kitty isn't coming home either.  I'm sitting
here crying my eyes out.  The vet called this morning after his
consultation with the oncologist regarding medical treatment.
Evidentally the biopsy showed so many things wrong.  They did a biopsy
of multiple organs.   I can't go into it all right now because I'm
upset but she had lymphoma too.  I loved her so much.  The vet and I
did all we could.  She used to have this stuffed raccoon she carried
around the house (I posted awhile ago about how cute it was) and now my
other cat is licking it.  He knows she's gone.  And she's not coming
home.  Oh god, I'm so upset.

I"m so so so sorry. I so totally understand. I will say I finally felt
"complete" when I got Grant's ashes back. But it's just so darned hard.
((((hugs))))

I'm so sorry, Laura. I'm sure this cat was lucky to have you for as long as
she did.

So sorry Laura. You did the best you could for her.

Laura, I'm terribly sorry for you and your kitty.  It's very unfair.
Time really will make it better although she will always be a part of
you.  She knew you loved her and I'm sure you will meet again one day.

My condolences.

Laura, I'm so so very sorry for your loss. IBD is horrible to watch
a cat go through. She's out of pain now. Purrs for your broken
heart.

Thank you SOO much everyone for your thoughts and prayers.  It is so
difficult no matter how many times I tell myself I did the right thing.
Today I received a nice basket of flowers delivered from my vet and
staff and tonight my husband brought me flowers when he got home from
work.  I'm thankful to everyone for such wonderful support.  My kitty
had a "light way" about her.  Very gentle and loving.  I feel her
gentleness in my heart more than ever today.
Rhonda - 23 Jun 2005 03:52 GMT
I'm sorry, Laura. It's so hard to let them go.

Sounds like she decided to leave some of her best qualities with you.

I never thought of it that way.  That's nice.  Thank you.
