Fatass is 16, and ever since the past winter when I had a pot of water
on the floor in the bedroom for humidity, she comes in early in the
morning and drinks from it for a good minute. She also drinks from her
regular water dish, but not with the same voracity. Since she sees the
pot as a water source now, I refill it and keep it clean, even though I
don't really need it there anymore.
She is perfectly healthy - good checkups every year (That last one in
Nov.), eats, plays, sleeps, purs, and is very social...Just seems odd
that in the past few months she has been drinking more than usual.
One other odd think that I have recently noticed - I recently switched
to a clumping litter, and she seems to taste it every time she goes in
the box...not eating a ton of it, just a lick or two before she does
her business...Now I have had a dog that used to eat his own sh.t, but
I have never heard of a cat doing anything like that...Anyone ever hear
of this?
Thanks,
Bluesman

She should be checked again by the vet. This could be a sign of diabetes or
chronic renal failure among other diseases (drinking a lot of water). Six
months have gone by since she was checked and for an older cat this is a
long time. Eating litter can also be a sign of anemia.

At the check-ups, does your cat get a blood test? Even if she did, it
sounds like it's time for another one. My vet does a "senior panel" to
check for the 4 or so major things that can happen to older kitties. Has
she lost weight?
As far as the litter, it can't be good for her to get a clumping litter
inside of her. I know of rabbits who have died from the litter damaging
their intestines -- don't know if it can work the same in cats, but I
wouldn't chance it. I'd change to a different litter right away and get
a blood test for FA.
Let us know how it turns out, good luck!

If you want to stick with clumping litter, try swheat scoop. It is
available at Petco and Petsmart as well as many smaller pet stores now.
And it is made of ground wheat. It's completely edible and digestible,
so anythig taken in is simply digested through the system - no harm
done.
I have a dog who still manages to get into the box on occasion, so
prefer having litter than I know won't harm her.
It's a bit spendier, but it works well, keeps odor down, and well worth
it, in my opinion.

Egad - I am not liking the sound of any of this. I have an appointment
made witht the Vet for Thursday (earliest I could get) to get Fatass
checked out.
Here is my place.

For those that have had cats with the early stages of kidney problems
or diabetes, what has the treatment been, and how successful? I don't
want Fatass dying on me.

You need to get your cat to the vet ASAP and have a full blood workup
done. Drinking a lot of water and eating litter point to kidney disease
w/ concurrent anemia.

Diabetes is also a concern, especially if your cat is overweight and
eating dry food.

Yes, my late cat Emily who died of lymphoma (age 14) began eating
litter in her last days. She was anemic.
