Hi,

I've noticed that Vicki's water has an awful smell when I go to change it.
Sometimes the tap water has an "algae" smell when you first turn it on, but
this smell does not match.

I feed Vicki Nutro wet food..could it be that since she usually drinks
around the time she's eating that some of the food is getting from her
mouth and tongue and getting in the water, giving it that smell?

She also has three large vaccination and identification plates..They dangle
in the water while she drinks..Could they be creating the smell. One of the
plates was made by those in-store tag machines..Perhaps the water is making
the paint on the tag leach off?

Just wondering whether anyone has had any experience with this..She doesn't
seem to mind the smell, or be affected by it (unless she's slowly being
poisoned).

I'm going to buy bottled water and see if that makes a difference..If it
doesn't, then it is something outside the water (does my cat have lead
poisoning? I adopted her recently from a shelter, she's 6 years old)

thanks!
Bev

Hmmm. My cats water will get slimy if I don't change and rinse the dish
pretty frequently. Definitely you want to do that because yuck from the
mouth gets back in. It think it really is rather like rinsing out your mouth
partially. I doubt it is hurting her if that is the kind of thing you are
talking about, but I would try bottled water because if  your TAP water has
algae in it, I don't know how good that would be.

If you are using plastic bowls throw them out.  They can retain odors and
bacteria over time.  The best thing to use is either metal, glass or ceramic
and to wash them often.

Have you considered buying a kitty drinking fountain?  My four *love*
ours (Drinkwell) and it's really easy to maintain.  I give it a total
cleaning once a week and just refill otherwise.  I can't imagine having
odor problems with such a set up.

You need to wash her bowl with hot water and soap if not after
each filling, after every other. And if the tap water itself is rank,
try one of those "PUR" filters, or, as you have mentioned, bottled
water. I use distilled for my own drinking. I just like the taste. My
cats get filtered water that comes from the front of my fridge. They
really like it, and definitely drink more often and longer since I began
using it.

Thanks Mary! Yours seems to be the best advice.

You know..I've been reading through the other threads, sort of new to this
site..But one thing I've experienced with message boards is that it's best
to just not respond to people if they get nasty/combative. Some of these
guys are just puerile a@$holes...especially that Philip guy. Why wear out
your keyboard on them?

Excellent advice. I don't care about the usual stuff, just when people
seem to want to be congratulated for neglecting or abusing their cats,
that just gets me.

Good luck with the water dish problem. Do post your Yahoo
or other photo site if and when you get any photos up of your
cats, I love to see them! Also we sometimes post photos to
alt.binaries.pictures.animals.

Stick around Beverly ... stick around. Disagree with the Wicked Witch Mary
and you'll become her meal.
