I have a couple of cats that seem to have herpes.  My vet has prescribed a
drug, Idoxuridine, which I've tried to get locally at two pharmacies (BJs
and Walmart).  Neither had even HEARD of it!

Upon googling I find it is available as Herpex Liquifilm, and is quite
expensive.

Questions:  Has anybody had any experience with this stuff?  And, do you
have a source?

Thanks!

I don't remember the name of the antiviral that we got from the vet;
but it could very well have been Idoxuridine. It is expensive, but your
cat could lose its eyesight if the herpes isn't brought under control.
The good news is, we haven't had an outbreak in over 2 years here.
Did your vet mention L-Lysine? It's an amino acid, available at any
health-food-supplement store or counter. It will prevent future
outbreaks, and can be started along with the Idoxuridine therapy. Just
break the capsule open or crush the pill into their food. It DOES work.
Ask your vet about it, or do some googling.

Your vet prescribed this but didn't offer a source for it?
Your best option is to locate a veterinary opthamologist in your area
and get it from them as this is something they will definitely have on
hand. You can locate one by going here:

You also should start supplementing your cats with 500 mg of Lysine each
day. Buy it in capsule form rather than tablets as the powder in the
capsule is relatively tasteless and easily mixed in with food. Lysine
stops the herpes virus from replicating and will help your cats get
better faster. If they continue to get flare-ups giving Lysine
permanently will help to minimize or eliminate the problem.

Thanks to both of you who replied so far.  I didn't know losing eyesight was
an option!

She did prescribe lysine.  It's quite a challenge to give since the pills
are so big.  But we're doing it!

I also wonder about a couple other things:

Since stress in a multi-cat household causes outbreaks, could elavil help?
The cat who is currently suffering is definitely low in the pecking order.

Also, do you know if there is a definitive test for herpes?  She's been
sneezing and eyes watering (the third or fourth cat to do this in as many
years) and I was ready to have her sinuses x-rayed until I found out she'd
have to be sedated with accompanying bloodwork.  And right now that's not a
financial option.  Especially since educated opinions are saying herpes.

Thanks again!

I can't really help with the herpes, but as far as Lysine goes, what I have
done in the past is opened up the caplets and mixed the powder in with
canned food.  HTH.
