Maynard is at peace

friesian@zoocrewphoto.com - 24 May 2005 19:47 GMT Maynard is gone. He died very peacfully and quickly. He was gone before the injection was done. He just leaned against me and faded away. It couldn't have gone any better.
He is home now. We are letting all the cats and dogs see him and know that he is gone. We don't want them to wonder where he is, and this way, they start grieving at the same time. I still remember when Fiona died. Maynard hissed the first time, but returned shortly and purred. This time, Kira has checked on him a couple times and is now sitting on my lap.

You seem to be doing the best thing you can for all concerned, no matter how difficult, and that is admirable. Do you have a yard you can bury Maynard in?

I've just been going through my photos, and I have some really nice memories.

He was a blue-grey and used to shine really silver blue. I photographed him with kodachrome slide film while he was on a dark blue blanket, and it really brought out an awesome silver blue shine. It is my favorite photo of him. I will make a collage too.
One thing that really helped me with my first cat was to make a book. I wrote down all of my stories and illustrate with as many photos as I can. It will be easier for Maynard since I had my own camera for most of his life. The early photos are from my mom's camera (I've been planning to dig through her negatives for pics of him as well as my first cat and dog). But I have tons of photos of him.

That's a good way to celebrate his life. I wish he would have been able to be with you a little longer so that you could get more used to the idea of losing him, Meghan. I'm sorry it came down so suddenly. But it sounds like you had a nice time together at the end, and that his passing was peaceful.

> Sounds like you have excellent instincts for how to help yourself with > grief. I applaud you. When Fiona died years ago, I came up with the idea to illustrate a story I had already written. It was a characterization I did for a writing class. Once I got into the pictures, I realized there was much more to write about, so I started over and wrote a bunch of my memories. I really should go back and add to it. I know that it helps me at times to go back and look it over.
I found that putting together the book for Fiona helped me grieve. All the great memories coming back, and experiencing some of that joy again. I also learned back then that there so many photos I did not have. I may find some more when I go through my mom's things. But i have absolutely no photos of Fiona as a kitten. And I was such a small child then that I do not even remember her as a kitten. My pictures basically start when I was about 12 or 13 with a couple that may be older. I can't think of any that were taken before I was 10.
So, with Maynard, I made more of a point of taking more photos, and then I got into photography seriously, so I went overboard with Kira :)
But I am sure there will still be memories that exist only within my mind. I was thrilled to find a photo of him eating a twinkie. But I'v bene hoping for years to run along his early photos. Just after he left the ugly kitten stage, he turned bright blue. In every photo, regardless of lighting, he was bright blue. I have one photo as he left that stage, and you can sort of see the blue tint. But I know there was one that was really bright.

friesian@zoocrewphoto.com - 25 May 2005 07:12 GMT > He was a beautiful boy, and what an ugly ducking tale!! I figure he started out ugly so that nobody would take him. He was the runt of a litter of 8 kittens. My mom's cat chewed through a screen window, jumped two floors, and spent the night in the garage.
So, we gave away the first 7 kittens and figured we would keep one for a couple weeks longer as we were moving back from Iowa to Seattle. My mom mistakenly believed that keeping one kitten would keep the mother from going into season again.
So, after we got back to Seattle, we put up ads for a free kitten. But all we had were the ugly photos. Nobody even called.
My mom wrote this statement with the photo (I saved the post-it):
Handsome, healthy, strong but gentle, humorous young tom needs his own home and family. Would prefer home with teen girl and a dog (to harass) as companion. Presently shares home (and bed) with family, 2 dogs, 3 Siamese. Maynard is particularly fond of human food and active sinks! At 5 months, he has never been outside.
That would have been October. By November, I was asking to keep him as a Christmas present. I offered to pay for his neutering with my paper route money (and I did).
If he had been cute to start off with, we never would have had him long enough for me to keep him. He would have gone as a kitten.
So, I am quite happy that he was an ugly kitten :)

> So, we gave away the first 7 kittens and figured we would keep one for > a couple weeks longer as we were moving back from Iowa to Seattle. My > mom mistakenly believed that keeping one kitten would keep the mother > from going into season again. She was probably basing that on her knowledge that lactating females, at least in humans, tend not to get pregnant because active lactation, brought about by the presence of active sucking, keeps them from ovulating. It is thought by some to be a built-in mechanism that protects human mothers from becoming overextended, so to speak. But of course this is not true for cats.

Yes, she had actually arranged for a Siamese tom, and he was supposed to arrive the next day. This was back when my mom was a backyard breeder. I talked her out of that about 10 years ago.

-L. - 26 May 2005 01:51 GMT > Old saying: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" -- I behold that > kitten as adorable. MLB Ugly kittens grow up to be handsome cats. Sort of like the old saying "homely in the cradle, lovely at the table" for humans. My Peewee was ugly - wide nose, big head, and had ringworm. He's *such* a handsome guy, now.
