I have two cats and they both "trill". I use the word trill to
describe that sound they make before a full meow. One of my cats
trills all the time...every time I touch him and also he trills while
he walks around the house. I'm wondering about this trilling because
I've had other cats over the years and none of them trilled like the
two I have now. It's a cute little sound. I love it!

Some cats just do that. It is so cute. I had one who "trilled" as a
greeting when he'd see me come in the door.
My daughter's Maine Coons both "trill" more often than a full "meow."

Hmm...my boy cat is a part Main Coon. Not only does he trill, but
every evening arounnd 6pm or so he walks around the house yowling for
about 5 minutes. He's quite the character. Mama's Boy for sure!

It's the same sound a mother cat will make to call her kits in the
wild. My Mimi does it instead of meowing.

I have 2 Russian Blues (brothers) who call to each other that way.
Otherwise, they are virtually silent, unless heading to the vet in a
carrier.: )
It's very sweet.

Trilling is one of the basic sounds cats make, along with meowing,
purring, howling, growling, hissing, spitting, whimpering, and chirping.
And just like those other sounds, there is a variety of trills. The
sound is usually associated with Maine coons, which are noted for their
extensive vocabulary. But many other cats also trill. Feline experts
regard it as a cat's "come hither" sound, seeking another's attention
for some reason, or even just as a simple greeting.

How cute! A "come hither" sound. :) I think my other kitty (a black
kitty) is picking this up from her "brother" (my part main coon). They
were ferral cats rescued at 6 mos old and I adopted both of them at
that time. They've been buddies ever since. She never trilled at the
beginning but she does now. I love cats. They're so entertaining!

They really are. Just as my tuxedo does a trill, a head bob, and
extends one paw (all at the same time) when she is glad to see us,
my little tabby has all sorts of sounds that mean different things.
(I'm not psychic, I can tell from the situation!) As she flies by
when she has the zoomies she likes to say "meh!" at the moment
she passes me. When I am loving on her and she is not in the
mood, she has the tiniest, highest pitched little "moan" for lack
of a better term. Like she is far too polite to really complain,
but if I really want to know she would rather be left alone
at the moment. :)

Maynard did it a little. His was a response. I'd call him, and he make
a little trill sound. Otherwise, he meowed and talked like a typical
siamese (he's half siamese).
Jay Jay is my newest arrival, and he has got to be part Maine Coon. He
is 16 lbs, quite fluffy, quite a chatterbox, and does more trilling and
chirping than meowing. I've referred to him as bilingual. He talks two
different styles, and I am still learning how to interpret the new
style.

Two of my four "sang" a *lot* as kittens. One has grown up now and
doesn't trill anymore. The other is coming up on 10 months of age and
still trills, although he meows as well. The other two will trill
occasionally, but not a lot.
I do love it, too. :-)

Lionel Trilling, U.S. author and critic.
As for the trilling of cats, it's a vocal flutter, akin to someone
rolling uvular Rs. Think of voiced purring.

Maine Coons seem to be the most "affected"

I don;t know of another way to put it! It is a rolling,
thrrrrrrpppppping kind of birdy sound. :)
tracyrose@gmail.com - 24 May 2005 21:17 GMT
Yep. The Maine coon mix does it all the time. She has taught her
"vocabulary" to the formerly silent tuxedo and now they both do it.
It's especilaly cute when they run around singing to themselves :>

Oh, I want me one! I've never heard that.
