* I use the word kill in place of manymore horrifying adjectives that some
people *do* do to cats :(

In the UK black cats are considered to be lucky through when it comes
to re-homing- not so lucky as they tend to get neglected when people
come looking for a cat.

Sarrasine and Redunzel though are two "not so lucky" black cats
tomorrow. It's Dave's birthday so we are going to an art gallery, for a
meal and to a gig so guess who are going to spend most of the day on
their own?

Not a good marketing technique, IMO.

Agreed.  I hope at least they do thorough screening on the people adopting.
We are also very careful around Halloween with the black cats.

I do, too. And the fact that they've put the black cats "on sale" bugs
me. It rather indicates they are of less value or something. Anyone who
will pay $50 for a cat, will also pay $80. If a $30 savings makes or
breaks the decision to adopt, can they really afford the cat anyway?

I know, like it's buying a toaster or something.  "Oh this one's on sale,
I'll take it!"
I've never had an adopter make a decision based on price.  Our senior (7 yrs
+) cats have a lower fee than younger cats, but I don't think it makes a
difference.  We've done "Adopt-A-Thons" before during typically slow months,
where we lower the adoption fee to try to get more cats moved, and they
never work.  No one goes, hey cats are on sale, think I'll get one.
Plus they used my least favorite phrase in this article (granted, could have
been the writer's choice, but I still hate it) "get rid of".

I think the way this works is you show up thinking your going to get a
black cat, and they say...sorry sold out just an hour ago, can't keepem
on the shelves, but we have this niice tabby..he's super friendly, had
all his shots.

I agree, I hope they can be selective, why not, they do it with people.
If you goto adopt a child they screen you heavy, or at least thier
supposed to.

I don't know if it's lore or what but a black cat is very appealing to
me.....all cats hold some kind of mystery to me but the black ones
just a bit more mysterious to me.......I think I just talked myself
into a black cat for my rescue cat if I do that.......lol......I
didn't realize that people shyed away from taking black cats from a
shelter do you think its just because of folklore.....??

Solid black cats are hard to place at shelters. It's just not one of
the colors that most people choose. I do love them, though I've never
had one. Especially the shorthaired, sleek, lanky ones that look like
panthers. :-)

That describes Sabra perfectly, Sherry.  He was very much that way.  I
am going to miss my little panther.

I didn't know you had lost Sabra? I'm so sorry, Ginger-Lyn. I know how
much you're missing him.

Thank you, Sherry.  The vet helped him cross to the Bridge on
Thursday.  He apparently had lymphoma, and had stopped eating and was
very weak.  There is a hole in this house , even with 7 other cats.  I
miss him; he was such a special character.

I'm very sorry about Sabra, Ginger-lyn.  It's nice that you have a vet
willing to come to your house so that he could pass in his own
environment.  My condolences...

I got one of those.  I didn't go to adopt a black cat, but she took the
decision out of my hands and adopted *me* (Meep's a UK Cats Protection
League rescue).

Oh, and wish her a happy birthday, she turns 9 on Sunday!

Happy Purrday Meep!

I love black cats. I have one, and had one other. Just so panther-
like and sleek.

I noticed in Meep's last picture, the profile of her, that she has
something that I've noticed in female cats lately. I used to only
have males, but in the last 2 years I now have 2 females, too. They
both have a large boney protrusion on the chest like Meep has, and
my males don't have this.  Is this a gender characteristic I
wonder?

Maybe its those eyes the way they standout against the black like in
that first picture that intrigues me.......good picture....so you know
if black is a very dominant color as in female usually has litters of
black I thought I heard that somewhere.
