Cat suddenly started wobbling

Coconut - 11 May 2005 02:54 GMT Hi Folks, I adopted a two year old male this Monday (yesterday) and he is a friendly outgoing cat. He was fine all day yesterday and very active, even tho I had him quarantined to my room. About two hours after he came home, I introduced him to my dog...the two hit it right off the bat and like each other quite a bit, which was a relief to me. This morning he was fine also. I was out all day and upon returning, I noticed he was under my desk, so I called him and he came stumbling out - I thought he just tripped on the wires or something, but once he got out into the open, I saw that he could barely walk. He looked totally drunk as he made his way to me. After he rubbed on me, he wobbled to the dog and rubbed all over him too.. I took him downstairs to show my father and the cat was like laying on his side in my arms and his head would jerk once in a while. My father was baffled too over the poor thing. When I brought the cat back to my room, I scratched his ears and noticed that when I scratched his right ear, he'd shake his head like mad and fall over onto his side... What could this possibly be? I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow night, but I just wanted to ask peoples opinions first about what may be wrong with him.
Thanks very much, Chris
Coconut - 11 May 2005 02:55 GMT PS: I should add that I got him from a reputable no-kill shelter and he was last vaccinated in february.. Many thanks, Chris

So you are waiting for opinions before taking him to the vet *tomorrow* night?
Okay, suppose you start wobbling about like you are drunk yet have ingested nothing to cause this behavior. So your family decides to wait 24+ hours before seeking real medical help.
What do you hope to achieve with the delay?

I've had HUNDREDS of creatures of all sorts my entire life (I grew up on and still live on a farm), so please don't assume that I will not take him to the vet...geezuus (#2)

He really needs to be seen NOW. Tomorrow evening may be too late. He could have had a seizure, gotten into poison, any number of things. I really can't think of anything benign that this could be.

Remember you are in a group that is extremely protective of their animals so you are going to get a stronger message than from your average animal owner out in the street. I'm sure everything will turn out fine and your kitty will be ok; we're glad you are being responsible enough to take him to the vet and not just wait for nature to take its course.
mlabofski@yahoo.co.uk - 11 May 2005 18:48 GMT Well the symptoms sound similar to Otis having a hypo, although I'm sure it could be one of a number of other things too, boy I wish they could tell you what's wrong when they're ill - I thought we'd finally cracked the overeating when he started to lose weight, it was only when he started eating like a pig AND losing weight did I realise summat was up.

Comments were made on what you *did* post.
Delays in seeking medical help and the consequences of such are not counteracted by seeking medical help in a newsgroup.
If I had a sick animal my first thought and action would be to seek out a vet asap, *not* to post in the newsgroup looking for opinions. Of course, we all operate from a different set of values and experience.
Elle - 12 May 2005 16:41 GMT > <Joe.Canuck@-remove-gmail.com> wrote: > [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > I would like opinions, because I like to be informed of > things... Good for you.
Your reasoning is completely correct in asking for people's experience with the symptoms you are seeing.
In fact, my former cat had weight loss, saw the vet on Monday, had what I believe to be dangerously out of spec blood test results by Tuesday morning. The vet didn't see fit to call me until Tuesday afternoon. Nor did he emphasize the danger in which I believe my cat could be perceived to be based on the blood test results. My cat died less than 24 hours later.
AFAIC, posts responding to queries like yours should 1. double check the poster intends to go to the vet 2. also provide experience the responder may have with the particular malady.
Vets are over-rated, because they don't have the time and often don't have specialized experience. I think had I more time, the boards (this and others) would have saved my cat's life.
> because, not all vets pick up on different illnesses or they > misdiagnose, just like regular doctors do to us humans.. Absolutely.
I do think this is serious. I think maybe it's important for the owner of every cat that displays extreme changes in behavior to know especially the signs of a cat likely dying. One can google for these. Had I known these I could have seriously considered euthanasia for my cat in his final hours, as opposed to his dying a frankly horrible death. Which was my fault.
bigbadbarry - 11 May 2005 03:14 GMT Well best to you and your new cat.
I know balance (equilibrium) is in the inner ear (at least for humans).
stop touching his ear. Just kidding.

As to what it can be, obviously none of us can really know. However, one thing that immediately concerns me is the possibility that he may have ingested something toxic. For example, there are many plants that are poisonous to cats (a recent message on this group pointed out that lilies can be fatal). Cleaning preparations, toilet bowl cleaner (including the type that hang on the tank and continually release cleaner into the bowl), insect insecticide, and even floor wax can be dangerous. Look around and see if there is anything at all that he could have eaten.

Rhonda - 11 May 2005 04:39 GMT Was he quarantined today while you were out? I was wondering if the dog could have played too hard with him when you weren't there.
This really is an emergency. I hope he's okay. Someone else said he could have gotten into something toxic, that sounds logical to me.
I wish there was a way to get him in earlier, sounds like it's hard for you to get a ride to the vet. Maybe there are some animal-lover friends who can help you. I know people who would help me move heaven and earth if an animal was sick. I would be so nervous about waiting until tomorrow night, given the sound of his condition.
Could he have bitten a cord under your desk and been almost electrocuted?
Good luck, I hope he's feeling better.

We suspect an inner ear problem.. But it was very scary.... The vet did nothing.. We had to wait for the blood tests.... She got better before we got the results. Please let us know how she is doing.....

In infer from one of "Coconut's" messages that he/she probably lives in an area where there are no emergency pet services. For example, the message included this statement: "I live in the middle of nowhere and had to BEG to get him in there before thursday." For that reason, I stressed the emergency aspect of this situation and urged the OP to try again to convince the vet to take the cat immediately on an emergency basis instead of fitting him into a standard appointment.

For Gods sake can't you all just answer her question......one person maybe two tell her she should get to the vet sooner but then the rest of you can't wait to tell her the same damn thing again and again. She got it after the first posting obviously she has problems getting to the vet ........I hate this gang mentality and yes even though you all are trying to help there is no reason to keep slamming over and over ........sorry (sort of) but I knew this would happen immediately when I read the post......most of you are just making her feel worse.....
now go ahead and slam me for awhile and leave her alone unless like a few did give her some ideas on what might be causing this so she can quiz the vet like she asked for....

You had a perfectly good opportunity to do a good thing and help a great cat that needed a home and you chose instead to pay a bunch of money to a breeder. That makes you an a.shole in my book. It's really very simple.
It makes sense that you would be an apologist for someone whose cat is obviously having a health emergency, and yet posts to Usenet instead of taking immediate action. You don't do the right thing, you do the most convenient thing or the thing that appeals to your shallow tastes. You wanted a cat that looked a certain way, or has "papers" that bring some illusion of higher social status to you, or you just buy into the old conspicuous consumption dance. I don't care. What matters is that there is a cat that will not be rescued because you paid a f.cking breeder to make a new one. Dickhead. Of course that is just my opinion. You will find any number of OTHER DICKHEADS who feel differently. HTH.

I"m sorry but I still don't see what my buying a breed has to do with the OP or did you just find a way to make some self serving statements about what a wonderful person you are.....I have pity on any animal that gets trapped into living with you.......I have a growing suspicion that your parents let you on a doorstep somewhere and that has a lot to do with your anger and believe me the fact that nine other families also rejected you has no indication that you are less than desireable to live with......
I know communication is important to any relationship but I gotta tell you sweety.......I think you may have set ours back a little bit.....I gotta tell you it kind of excites me a little when you swear at me like that.....you would be my dream girl if you cursed like that during love making.......could I be so lucky.....?? I suppose when its just you and your rubber toys its hard to get to verbal huh....??
Hugs and smooches......

" HOLY @#$%... WHAT A RIDE!" Brad is just trying to point out that by repeating the "GO TO THE VET NOW" phrase, you are making Coconut feel worse. She obviously did the best in her power to get to the vet ASAP and was trying to find some support here in the short time between. It seems like she lives with her family still, so do we know how old she is? She may not be able to drive yet or have a car, or there may be some other obsticle in the way. It seems apparent she cares for her pet, and given the state of how so many pet owners treat their animals, I think she did more than the average person by making the vet appt as soon as she could and trying to find answers in the mean time. If I knew anything about her situation, I would have tried to offer a viable answer; however I dont so I could only offer support, which is what she was looking for, not being berated by a list of posts with nothing in them except, "GO TO THE VET" in 'shouting' words.
Brad, I'll take the heat with you, I agree with your post.
Rhonda - 12 May 2005 14:19 GMT I know, Brad. I think it's all in how you say it.
I am guilty too, but I think it's important to go earlier -- and I try to explain why. I believe people appreciate you talking to them like a human being instead of "VET NOW" or that sort of order being barked out. That would turn me off instantly.
Thanks for the reminder,
Rhonda

Well, yes, but come on--it is the equivalent of someone posting "My cat's bleeding all over the place, what should I do?" It does not take a genius to figure out it's vet time. Half the time I suspect these people are looking for an excuse to avoid the expense. I would almost rather think that than to think they are this stupid.
Rhonda - 13 May 2005 04:33 GMT The better bet is to think that they honestly want our opinions, or they just don't know what to do. Talking to them and explaining things in a human to human way can save a cat.
If you assume they are stupid instead of giving them the benefit of any doubt, the condescension will come out in the tone of the post, and the poster (and sick cat) will be gone from here in a second.
