It was a narrow "V" that he apparently fell into.  I don't know how
long he was out here hanging by his midsection.   Now his bottom half
does not work.

I don't think he broke his back because he can move his back legs move
just a bit.  I can feel him push a little with his back legs.  I don't
know how long he was hanging there by his mid section.

I think his back end fell asleep because he was hanging for so long.
or at least I hope...

I called the local animal emergency, and they said to just wait and
observe...

Is there anything I can do?
bigbadbarry - 10 May 2005 13:24 GMT
oh man, poor little fella

have you tried soaping him up?
(the whole fork and all)

you could carve some tree away in front or behind him or above him

put someting under him keep him from going deeper

you could rope the limp connecting to 1/2 of the fork, and open fork a
little
maybe someone could assist you with rescue, when you relieve pressure
with rope.

if tree is huge, i'd try remove bark around him, soap it all up.

Don't you have a regular vet you can take him to today? There is
something dreadfully wrong and he needs to be x-rayed. Good luck.
Please keep us updated.

1. The problem is not the cat being still stuck in the tree.
2. The cat is already out of the tree.
3. The problem is apparent paralysis

YES YES soap......Ivory or Palmolive though is the real
question.....cut the damn tree down it don't matter the damn cat is in
the house.....lol.....Sherry you gotta be a little clearer next
time...

My uneducated guess is that its a temporary loss of feeling in the
lower half of the body I hope your vet agrees with me.....I lost all
feeling in a hand one morning when I got up saw a nuerologist  and he
said just wait you probably slept on it and it will come back and it
did.

Take him to the vet NOW. This is a serious emergency.

Take him to the vet.
I can't believe the clinic would tell you to "wait and see". If they really
did, someone needs to file a complaint.
I assume you're in the States, so if not, say so. Things are a bit different
other places. But here, that's just downright negligent.
Take him in to a real vet. ASAP. He could be bleeding internally. If he fell
into that position, he could have ruptured internal organs. Or he might have
swelling in his spine that needs treated before it totally cuts off function.
Only your vet can tell, so go.

I took Peanut to the vet.  They say his liver is damaged.   After
testing, it appears the damage is NOT from an infection... it seems to
be from trauma.  His "enzyme levels are at 1600, while 100 is normal,
and 400 is high.

So he stayed at the vet's last night, and he will be there today as
well, if not longer.  I am not sure if he will make it.  After tallking
to the Vet, I just have no clue if his liver will recover.  I feel like
a complete a.shole because he was probably stuck in that tree for some
time before I heard him...

I'm so sorry Peanut is so seriously injured. Please don't blame
yourself--there are so many things a cat can get into, inside and
outside. I really hope he makes it.

As far as the "emergency clinic" that I called at 2AM, they really were
not helpful.  Oh, and I am really annoyed.  I asked what I should do
when I called the clinic.  They just said to wait and observe.  He was
moving much better the next morning, so I assumed he was getting better
and I went to work.  Well, in the afternoon I returned from work, and
found Peanut just sitting by his water dish, with his face almost in
it.  I could see that Peanut had eaten and puked.  So I brought him to
the vet immediately.

I SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT HIM SOMEWHERE THAT NIGHT, OR AT LEAST EARLY IN
THE MORNING, BUT I DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS APPROPRIATE!  Next time, I am
going to bring him to the vet no matter what.  I am so pissed off.  I
hope he makes it.

I do too. Poor little guy. Hopefully, since it is liver damage from trauma
and not poison or infection, maybe it can heal. PLease keep us posted.

I hope so too, Hanson.  Maybe you should get a different vet.  Maybe
they can do something surgically, or at least get a better read on the
extent of the damage.

Keep us posted and don't blame yourself.  If the injury was the result
of a fall, Peanut might be in the same condition even if you had found
him immediately and taken him to the vet immediately.

Hanson,

I am so sorry to hear about your kitty. Please don't be so hard on yourself.
You just didn't know what to do, and did what you were told to do. Poor
Peanut. Anyway, I'm really sorry about this sad ordeal, and will say a
prayer for the little guy to make it through and recover well.

Is is possible that maybe a hawk or owl got him and that's how he wound up
in the tree..? I guess we'll never know, but please do keep us posted on how
he is doing.

W/ concern,

Cut it out......you can't be all places at all times.....besides that
tell me what you would do if I woke up one morning and your hand felt
like it was asleep......I bet you a dollar you would say well I will
just wait a bit and see if the feeling starts coming back......so
don't blame yourself for not taking the cat in right away......for
heavens sakes the nuerologist had me wait three days for an appoinment
when I had almost no feeling in my left hand......quit blaming
yourself and channel your energy towards helping him recoup.

Wait and observe was probably good advice and you don't even know the
liver problem had anything to do with incident.....quit punishing
yourself......

**That's fantastic! Thanks for letting us know becuase many of us (helloo,
Candace :-) were wondering how 'Peanut' was doing after his ordeal. Do you
mind sharing the latest on how he's doing today? Is he eating? Please
continue to keep us updated on him. I bet you won't let him outside for a
looong time :-).
