I have a 7 year old female DSH cat. She has suddenly taken to peeing
outside of her litter box and all over my carpet. She pees on shoes she
pees just outside the door of her litter box she peed on my purse that
was laying on the floor and to be honest I am really tired of this. We
just moved into our home a month ago and it stinks now. I need some
advise on how to get rid of the smell. I tried to steam clean and it
seemed to make it worse. I know stress can cause this and I am hoping
this is just a phase but if it keeps up I may have to take drastic
measures. We just added another cat to our home a few weeks back but he
stays in another part of the house and they never see each other. I am
more worried about how to get rid of the smell than anything
else....thanks

Did you take her to the vet? 9 out of 10 times it is a medical problem. Do
that first, then come back here.

Sorry, don't know how to get rid of the smell, hopefully someone else
here will have good ideas on that.

How about using that Feliway stuff?  I've never used it before, but so
many of the people here swear by it, it must be good.

Assuming there is no medical reason and you've taken her to the vet to
check for a urinary tract infection...

Stress. You moved into a strange home a month ago. The smell of the
strange cat started soon after (she may not see him, but she can smell
him). I would imagine you aren't too thrilled with her right now, so she
senses your stress and anger. This cat's a mess.
Take her to the vet and make sure there is no physical reason for this
behavior. Assuming not, the vet can prescribe a mild tranquilizer or
anti-anxiety med so she calms down a bit. Get some Feliway in a diffuser
to help calm her (this can take up to a week to get a noticable effect,
hence the tranq). Leave her there while you clean the house if you can.

Get a really good enzymatic cleaner - clean with that, then let it dry.
Then put vinegar and water in a steam cleaner and clean with that. Let
it dry. Until the carpet is cleaned, confine your cat to a room she has
not soiled (bathroom?) with a litterbox, food, etc. Make sure you
comfort her, play with her, and love her so she knows you aren't
stressed and angry (even if you are). That's if you can't leave her at
the vet for a day or two...
She will continue to soil if she smells the urine, even after any
behavior problems have resolved, so you need to get that smell out.
Also, chances are, the other cat will also soil as soon as he smells it.

Once you've gotten the house cleaned, the kitty is calmer, and you are
calmer, you can let her have the run of the house again. If she
continues to soil the house, I'd recommend consulting with a
behaviorist.

Hey, if you got it flaunt it! If you don't, stare
at someone who does. Just don't lick the TV screen,
it leaves streaks.

I've used Nature's Miracle with success in getting rid of cat urine smell.

First of all, get a black light ("Stink Finder") from a pet supply store and
wait until dark to use it.  Turn on the black light in the darkened room and
it will cause a cat urine stain to glow.  Verify with your nose that it is a
urine stain.  Corners of the room seem to be the favored spot, but anywhere
along the wall is likely as well as any object having the smell of the other
cat.

When you've located a stain, soak it thoroughly with Nature's Miracle.  When
the fabric dries, the odor should be gone.  If the odor lingers, you
probably didn't soak the stain thoroughly enough.  Don't forget to check
furniture, drapes, and walls for stains.  There are almost certainly urine
stains you aren't aware of.  They're probably the source of the continuing
smell.

If you have a place to confine the cat, have the carpet professionally
cleaned.

I just tried Nature's Miracle because our cat is peeing in the
corners.  I used up a whole bottle, I think it was about 32 oz. on 2
spots and they both still smell.  In one corner, the pee spread more
and still smells really bad.  I have heard others say this is a great
product.  What am I doing wrong or do I just need to keep using more
until the smell and stain disappears?  Please help!

We've used enzyme cleaners in the past, with great success.  Exod was
the brand name of the one we used.  It was pricey, but it worked!

I can understand your frustration!  We just moved ourselves, and I've
been trying to give our 4 cats each special attention so they won't take
out their stress at moving on our furniture - as one has done in the past.
From what I've read, when cats start behavior like this after a change
(moving, new pets), it's to mark the territory as theirs.  So, your
kitty may be feeling threatened - if it's not a medical condiiton causing
her behavior.

Good Luck!
