My new cat, Tweaker, went to the vet last week, and now I see he has
developed a callous between his shoulders, and the skin there is
tender and raw. I suppose this is an antibody reaction to one of the
vaccines. Is this common? Is it a problem?
He is the sweetest of cats, BTW. He always wants to be in my lap and
he puts his paws on my shoulders and hugs me. He is a pest, forever
getting into stuff, and he harrasses my dog (who could crunch his
spine like a milk bone if she wanted to), but we both love him to
death. He always keeps his claws tightly pulled in and his play bite
is gentler than any cat I have known. He is tiny -- about 4 lbs I
would guess.

Usually reactions to vaccines are lumps forming. I've never seen it become
raw but it is definitely something I would want my vet to see that. If he is
reactive to vaccine, you will want, in the future, to use Purevax vaccines.
They really do work for cats that are sensitive to vaccinations. But if the
place is actually raw, I would want a vet to see it and perhaps get some
antibiotics to make sure it does not become infected. He sounds like a real
sweetie and he must be very young to be so tiny.

That happened to Yoda the last time he was vaccinated. (He also had a
severe reaction to the vaccines, and was never vaccinated again--so the
raw spot was the least of our problems at the time)
Anyway, the vet gave us Panalog to put on it and it eventually scabbed
over and cleared up. Before it was over with, though, he had lost the
hair on a spot about the size of a quarter.
