Not much has changed. She is still extremely wild and spends most of
her time hiding behind the wastebasket, which is a comfortable spot at
least.
I have decided that on Monday I am going to crate her by hook or by
crook and get her to a vet, to find out if she is really pregnant, and
if not get her spayed so she can be released.
I would think she'd have had them by now. I honestly don't know what
is going on.
I suppose I could get some benzos (ativan, xanax etc.) and put them in
her food to make her more tractable. Has anyone done that?

I'd check with the vet before giving her any sedative meant for humans -
cats are so much smaller and an overdose could be fatal. I think you're a
very big-hearted guy to take the trouble to care for this poor kitty!

I'm not feeling particularly noble. I have kept her a prisoner in my
bathroom for almost two weeks now. I will be honest -- I can't really
get a good look at her from behind, no matter how I position that damn
camera. It has been quite frustrating. But, I don't think she is
pregnant. I think I trapped her right after she had her kittens.

Charlie, I think she would have been climbing the walls to get to
them if that were the case. That is a strong instinct.

But you have *seen* her since you trapped her and she still looks as
chubby as she did before, right? I think some other people mentioned
that girl kitties pretty much get their svelte figures back right after
having kittens. I guess a vet is the only real answer for you.

Do not drug a pregnant cat, Charlie. Jesus.

Bah! You're a worry-wart. In any case, I don't have any valium or
xanax around, so I will probably get a net and put on welding gloves
and fight it out with her. Gonna be the ugliest thing since the
Andrews Sisters.

Well, I know you can do it. You could maybe use a blanket?
That might keep her from scratching you. I think she does need
to see the vet.

You don't need to fight it out with her. Just throw a bath towel over her
and pick her up and put her in the carrier. Once you have her wrapped up in
the towel, put it in the carrier opening and open the front of the towel
like a burrito- she only has one way to go-- inside the carrier.

There's no need to get a net. You have his cat in a small space and all
you need to do is don your welding gloves, put the carrier (w/door open)
in front of the wastebasket, then move the wastebasket. She'll probably
run into the carrier to get away from you, but you can also try pushing
her in with gloved hands. Even if she gets away she's still in a small
room and you should be able to grab her and drop her in the carrier
(stand it on end if you are at this point.)

Charlie - Just because she's been in the bathroom doesn't mean that
she's hopelessly wild or feral. Two weeks is nothing in cat time. My
semi-feral, who was really nothing more than a *very* badly socialized
abandoned stray, was under the bed for four and a half weeks before she
deigned to come out and join the family. I know it seems like an
unbearable amount of time, but why don't you just leave here there for
a few more weeks before you do anything drastic? You will find out, for
sure, if there are going to be kittens, and you may veru well discover
what kind of a cat you actually have on your hands. You've already gone
this far .... what's a few more weeks to do it right .....

I'm not going to do anything drastic; I am going to take her to the
vet. If she is pregnant (which I doubt very much at this point), I
will return her to the bathroom to have the litter. If she's not, I
will have her spayed, allow her to recover, and release her. I do not
want to inflict further suffering on this animal unless it is really
necessary. She's not my cat to torture.
As for the one in my lap... that's a different story. I just bought a
radio-controlled car.

Not without a vet seeing the cat *first.* Do you know for a fact that
this kitty is a girl? Have you ever been able to take a gander at
his/her "parts"?
I had a similar situation once and after finally getting the kitty to a
rescue group (after numerous failed trapping attempts) who had agreed
to let her have her kittens, foster them, find them homes, etc., found
out she was not "Betsy" as I had been calling her but "Bentley"
instead, an already neutered male cat who was just getting fatter and
fatter.
How long has the kitty been around and looked "fat"? They have a 63
day gestation period.
I wouldn't attempt to drug her, though, you could kill her. Maybe you
could call the vet you want to take her to and explain the situation
and he/she might give you something intended for cats to tranquilize
her. There is a drug called acepromazine that they use on cats but I
don't know if it would be safe for her. Talk to the vet first.

Not a good idea. Might kill the cat.

I recently (last June) rescued a pregnant cat who looked (and still
does) like she was going to drop them any day. In fact the vet thought
it would've been within the following two+ weeks after I brought her
in. That was sometime in June of last year. She gave birth July 20th
:-) (five beautiful kittens)...and was spayed soon after they were all
weaned. Why she is such a bowling ball is anyone's guess. She's check
out fine.
And by the way, years ago I rescued a siamese mix feral who had been
living above a ceiling in a bodega in Brooklyn, NY. It took us WEEKS
to get her to get near the catbox, which she promptly proceeded to try
to chew her way out of. I took her home and she behaved similarly to
yours. Not too long after, she relaxed and would sleep next to my head
every night. Eventually she was adopted out and was doing fine.
Good luck with yours!!
