We have a mostly white cat with pink ears and a pink nose. We also have
completely enclosed a cat balcony we've constructed out of hardware
cloth and plywood for our cats to lay outside in the sun.
Question: do any of you put suntan lotion on your cats' ears? This
didn't even occur to me until I saw a cat last week on vacation with
skin cancer. His ears had been removed and nose was swollen, poor baby.
He was an Italian cat, by the way -- he looked pretty hardy. :)
Bear's (our cat) ears are misshapen from untreated ear mites before he
was ours. I'm still concerned about skin cancer, although he's not out
constantly. Is skin cancer common on pink-skinned cats?

They are definitely more susceptible. I think there is actually a pet
sunscreen but I don't know how well it would work on cats who clean
themselves so often. Usually it is just advised to not let them out when the
sun is strongest.

Water-resistant sunscreens with sun protection factor (SPF) 15 or greater
applied to the ear tips twice daily.

Iben shows up every year about the time when school gets out.
He's not a kid, he just spends a lot of time hanging around
playgrounds. :)

Hi Mary,
Yep, I figured out before he said it that he is one of those Top

He fits the stereotype perfectly.
No more time to read his posts...

He really does, but with the downright malicious crap Lyn has
been filling this group with lately, Iben almost seems harmless.

And YOU have putting-things-in-their-proper-perspective issues. You've
made yourself emotionally ill by your constant obsession with it, in
fact.
FYI, Catz are not human beings. They are simple animals. And that's all
the consideration they deserve. They, like all other animals on this
planet, are placed here for OUR USE. Not the other way away around.
Only you moronically mentally ill liberalz like YOU think otherwise.
You have made yourself mentally ill by constantly stooping and
belittling yourself on issues such as tolerance, diversity, sensitivity
and feeeeeeelingz. I would tell you to see a shrink yourself, but most

Charlie,
There is a cure for trolls. It doesn't involve salt, however. I use it
liberally. I didn't use to but life is short, time is valuable, and I've
got none to waste on adults who haven't gotten past age 12 emotionally.

Don't you think that's a little shallow?
Ever see the news where "Jake" an animal is finding live bodies and
others from the world trade center, so let's put Jake in proper
perspective.
I think it's cool they built a balcony for the cats...
You say, they have nothing better to do?...First, I'm sure her cats are
highly entertaining...having their own balcony and so forth...
look at you dingaling...sitting up on the internet, posting on a cat

Okay, let's try to get serious. My own cats love to lie in the sun but if
they are on the deck and it gets too hot for them they will go in the shade
or into the house.

There's a guy who posts very rarely on rpca who had a white cat ...
her ears had to be amputated due to excessive sun exposure (which
she'd received before he found her).
So, it may sound silly to worry about cats and skin cancer, but I
don't think it is. Perhaps you should ask your vet. It may very much
depend on the climate; I'd imagine an arid, high-altitude region would
be more likely to cause these sorts of problems.

We're in Washington state so it's not that sunny here, but the sight of
that cat with his ears missing and big, swollen nose got to me. Our cat
seems to have taken more of a liking to the cat balcony this year.
I will ask the vet next time. As Karen pointed out, it probably is hard
to keep sunscreen on an animal that cleans himself constantly.
Thanks!

Our old white cat of 40 years ago was an outdoor cat that never
suffered any skin cancers in living to old age. She was a barn cat
and probably had plenty of hybrid vigor. Keep the can in the shade if
you are concerned. Sunscreen will not work because the cat will lick
it off. The PABA or whatever else they use probably isn't good for
the animal if swallowed.
Rhonda - 30 Apr 2005 05:54 GMT

Years ago Harpsie (cream coloured) got sunburnt ears. Vet was Not Amused, I
felt dreadful. Ever since then we've used todder roll on sunblock on his
ears, and he's never had problems since.
Our shelter head had a white cat called Blanche whose ears were removed due
to sun-caused skin cancer. Her owners had paid for the best of veterinary
care to get Blanche treated and she was declared completely free of cancer.
Her owners then called us to go and collect her from the vet and rehome her
because she was now "too ugly" for them without her ears. Blanche lived
happily with our shelter head Iin her own home) for about three years, until
eventually she developed untreatable skin cancer on her nose; she was pts
once it appeared to be at risk of causing her pain.
