We have a 3 year old cat Khamun and were thinking of getting a kitten to
keep him company after his brother Toot ran away a few months ago after my
fiancee and they moved into my house. He doesn't seem to miss him, and is
very affectionate and seems happy. He is in good health. We're both out at
work during the day so not sure what he gets up to then.

He's an outdoor cat and can come and go as he pleases - he does go out and
now socialises a bit with another cat in the neighbourhood (and others for
all I know) and gets exercise hunting mainly at night. He has not put on
weight.

In the house he can be a bit lethargic though, or just lazy in my fiancee's
view: he never responds to playing - maybe balls and other objects are a bit
dull when he goes out hunting every night. That was why I thought about
getting him some company to give him some interraction, but I read that the
departure of a more dominant housemate (which Toot was in my view, certainly
more curious and active) can bring cats out of themselves and make them
happier. This may have happened and he gets all the attention and affection
of course, which he loves.

Bringing in another cat may cause him to regress, perhaps - if the new one
ends up as a major presence, although we would do our best to make sure he
kept his position as #1, if that's possible. He's so easygoing that I think
introducing another kitten may be quite straighforward - not that I've any
experience though, just what I've read here.

What advice would you give - on getting another kitten or even to make him
more interested in play to engage his mind more?
