I came home and took her to the vet. He said that there was a tumor in
her ear and that there was nothing that could be done. That was why
she was ripping her ear apart. It was itching her and was only going
to get worse. That's why she was off balance (well, more than normal)
and she was likely nauseous and was having trouble eating. Could I
give her something to relieve the nausea and itching? No.
He said that bringing her back home would only extend her suffering. I
held her as he injected the sedative and when she was asleep I laid
her on the table and he injected the final drug.
I only had her nine months but she was a really determined little
critter and tough as nails. I still remember her slugging Espy when he
hissed at her that first time. Boy was Espy surprised. I'm really
going to miss her funny walk and sad little face. I hope I didn't wait
too long. I promised her a good place to die and I think she enjoyed
the ending of her life. And she died with someone who really loved
her.
Espy was confused when I came home with an empty carrier. He kept
looking inside it. But then I opened the back door and he went out
with Nipsy and they're running around the yard as I'm typing this.
Goodbye Jackie, you were really something special. And thanks to
everyone here for your advice and caring.

God I'm so sorry. I have followed Jackie's story from the very
beginning, and I know how much you loved her. Know that you
gave her the final, greatest gift you could. I am crying for her, and
for your loss.

This is truly a great thing to do for a sweet little old cat lady.
Thanks for sharing her story with us, Dave. You're a good man.

Aw, I'm sorry. But at least you wound up getting a diagnosis, & now know
what was going on w/ her ear. Only nine months that you had Jackie? Wow -
seems longer than that to me, but to you might well seem shorter.

I am so sorry :( I've been following Jackie's story since you saw her in
that pet store. Jackie was very fortunate that you came along and gave her
so much love and care. I know it's small comfort, but at least you were
able to find out what was causing some of her problems finally.
Goodbye Jackie.

This is breaking my heart! It sounds like the same thing Fugazi had.
I've been following Jackie's story and rooting for her all the way and
now just a day after the an anniversary of losing Fugazi this has
happened!!!!
I am sitting here crying...

She really was a pretty little tabby, and she had such a
sweet expression. I wonder what her life was like before
Dave rescued her? In any case, he took good care of her
in her last months. Very few people would adopt an older
cat and get her such good vet care.
Karen - 20 Apr 2005 01:08 GMT
I'm really sorry to hear this. But gosh, she had a real HOME for the last
months of her life. It was fate, because no one else would never have done
everything you did for her, or chances were slim anyway. That doesn't make
it easier but it is sure nice to know that she got a life of love and
caring. She knew family. (((((hugs)))))

Oh Dave, I am *SO* sorry to hear that! I know how your heart is breaking
and I wish there was something I could say to help. I can only say you gave
Jackie such good care and love that you've surely earned your place in
heaven for the sacrifices you've made for her during the time you had her!

I'd seen pics of Jackie before - maybe on abpa?, so initially replied before
looking at the ones of this link. Cute ones of her - esp. looking out from
the bottom part of the tower, 'driving her boat', & the profile pic; and
Nipsy's a cutie, too.

I'm very sorry, Dave, you kept your promise to her and I'm sure she
enjoyed the last 9 months very much. You loved her and did all you
could for her and you have such a nice setup for your kitties, how
could she be anything but happy? She loved you, too, I'm sure.

Dave,
I just wandered into here recently. I looked up some of your more
recent posts and looked at the pictures. She was a cutie! I
especially like the one with her in the box and Nipsy on top. I'm so
sorry. It's such a hard thing to do, but you're a good person for
keeping your promise to her.

I'm very sorry. Indeed she was very lucky to die with someone who really
loved her. The only human contact many cats have is the person ending their
lives.

There are going to be a lot of furballs waiting for us. I hope I don't
have to feed them all.

<G> For some strange reason, the old song my grandfather used
to play when he was goofing around comes to mind--it went "In
Heaven there is no beer--that's why we drink beer here." Maybe
it's the same with cat food.

Right, and I hope all the furballs I've had all my life get along with each
other. My cats tend to hate other cats.

I think that the Rainbow Bridge is supposed to get them all contented
with each other.
I forgot to say one thing about Jackie. She had the loudest purr per
pound (PPP) that I ever heard. I almost never heard another sound out
of her. I would see her mouth move like she was meowing but nothing
came out. Like she didn't actually have enough air or strength to
really push it out. But she would climb on the bed and just start
purring and it was like a lawnmower started up. Nipsy will lie by my
side and Espy will watch from the night table, but Jackie would climb
on my chest and just purr away sticking her face into my chin. Of
course she was also either dripping or drooling. I can put away the
baby wipes now.

I couldn't help any, but lurking around it was obvious how very much you
loved her.
