what material for climbing?

John Doe - 19 Apr 2005 10:21 GMT There has to be some material cats can use for indoor climbing besides carpet or Sissel rope. Maybe something that also can be attached to a 2 x 4. Maybe some sort of plastic grating (yes, of course it will have to be safe). Next time I go to the hardware store, I plan to spend a lot of time looking around. If I were able to design it myself, maybe it would be plastic grating with 1/8" holes deep enough so that claws would not hook into it. Besides cost, the objective is to provide something which will last and won't disintegrate. Any ideas for something besides carpet or Sissel rope for cats to use for climbing? I suppose someday there will be a material like sponge rubber which claws can dig into but not penetrate.

BOING
And I bet you they would take advantage of the springiness.
Nell - 19 Apr 2005 22:01 GMT I saved a 15 feet high trunk of leylandii (Leyland Cypress tree), lopped all the branches off, but left one to three inches of each to act as steps, stuck the lower end into a flat piece of timber with a hole in it, and attached the top end to the conservatory ceiling. Between the lopped branches there are segments of trunk which are wrapped in sisal, so the cats have 15 feet of pure vertical adventure on 1. sections of sisal rope 2. step-like branches 3. sections of bare bark. It's a bit of an obstacle course. I stand on a chair and hold biscuits at the very top and they scoot up to get them . . . that's if they're not already exhausted by some other activity!

Better the material disintegrate and provide some "give" rather than another surface that is more durable yet harder on your cat... not only that but a cat may not like the more durable material.
Old car tires come to mind, but that doesn't make a very good looking climbing post for inside your home.
Other ideas: old fire hose, old rubber garden hoses (real rubber)
pj - 19 Apr 2005 14:18 GMT Use the back-side of carpeting, not the soft front. Some carpet with wide weave is excellent for them to get their claws into for climbing. I used the carpet pieces (samples) that you can buy anywhere from $1.99 to $3.00. I've also wrapped a two-by-four and four-by-four with thick sisal. Terrific for kittens, because you can just lay it on the floor for them to rip into. Stand it up as they grow! -- pj

None of these are very attractive, but if you have a basement...

I've heard that cats like scratching it; maybe they would like climbing a cedar board. I have see boards scratched down to almost nothing so wood isn't that much more permanent than rope or carpet. Besides, wrapping a hundred or two feet of 1/4" rope around a post is kind of relaxing. ron

> * Screening (like for screen doors) > * Rubber mats Or rugged vinyl like for truck bed covering, saw one yesterday. Or other rugged rubber/vinyl maybe in conbination. Maybe something used with exercising equipment. That to be hotmelt glued/whatever onto wood or other structure.
The idea being to allow their claws to grip but not necessarily puncture, and for it to take a lot of punishment over time, without debris falling off of it.

I got an Ultimate Scratching Post for Oscar, and it has a sisal weave instead of just rope. If you could get your hands on this weave, I think you could make a wall out of it and let climber-cats go to town.
Oscar's never been a climber, but I've seen her on this scratching post with all four paws on the post. I really like the material.

Karen - 19 Apr 2005 14:52 GMT Hmmm. I've just always found carpet best. When I was little my dad came home with a HUGE stack of carpet samples and Liquid nailed them to one wall of my bedroom. For "insulation" he *said*. Yeah, right. Our cats enjoyed it for years.

try your local restaurant supply vendor?
youi could cut it iup and put it to the 2 x 4's
try the door mat section at walmart...cuttem up
if your usin 2 x 4's, you could put a little pitch on them or at stategic places to give a ledge

Phil P. - 20 Apr 2005 09:02 GMT > There has to be some material cats can use for indoor climbing > besides carpet or Sissel rope. Burlap. Cats *love* burlap - they get a great pull from it. I bought a role from a farm supply house to wrap the support columns in my basement. My cats dug right into the role and began climbing it before I had a chance to unroll it.
You can make a floor-to-ceiling climbing pole by wrapping a 6", 8", or 10" dia.x 8' long PVC pipe with burlap and plant it in large round decorative lawn planter filled with concrete- won't tip or budge and it will last forever. You can always just re-wrap the pole.
The higher you make the pole, the wider the pipe should be. If you want to make it absolutely wobble and tip proof, fill the pipe with concrete or gravel.
Tape the inside length of burlap to the pipe with gaffer's tape and wrap the pole tightly with several layers of burlap. Wrap the length of the end of the burlap around a 1" molding and screw into or bolt it through the PVC with 1/8 or 1/4" carriage bolts with wide washers-- I don't like using staples or adhesives on stuff my cats play on.
You can stagger shelves up the pole buy bolting decorative shelf brackets to the PVC and screwing burlap-covered wood shelves to the brackets. You can also make a high-level walkway with two poles and a 6' center PVC pipe. Connect the center pipe at the tops of the poles with either PVC "T" connectors or "elbows". Wrap the center span the same way as the poles.
The whole thing shouldn't cost you more than $100 unless you really splurge on the planter bases and shelf brackets - I've seen some nice brass brackets.

... drill a lot of small holes in the PVC tubing
... fix small nails/dowels/pegs into those holes
... press the tarp/burlap/whatever material onto the holes
... wrap it once and then press the material into the holes again
If the process of drilling the holes and inserting the pegs could be methodized, it might provide for an easy way to replace the material. Sort of like carpet tack-strip, except with dull pegs. I am not sure how the material could be wrapped more than once before reinserting it through the pegs. A somewhat stretchy, thick fabric might be best.
John Doe - 04 May 2005 09:39 GMT Went to Lowe's today. The 10 ounce canvas dropcloth looks pretty good, maybe hotmelt glued to a 2 x 4 or 4 inch PVC.

I've sat and thought of neat things I would do if I had the time, like make an over the door continous track (shelf) all around the house; it could be made to look nice. Some resta-ront I went to had a train track setup like this.
