CatNipped - 18 Apr 2005 00:28 GMT I was putting away my winter coats into the (seldom used) closet under the stairs earlier today. A few hours later I noticed Sammy sitting in front of this closet staring at the door. I didn't think anything of it and went about my business. A little while later I passed by and Sammy was still there. A few minutes ago I passed by again and she was still there - had not moved a muscle in almost two hours - so I opened the door to see what she had cornered and Jessie came running out.
Now, Sammy was not playing "paws" under the door with Jessie. She was just laying there staring at the door.
Have any of you witnessed this type of behavior between "siblings" when one is distressed, trapped somewhere, or in some kind of trouble?

Catherine - 18 Apr 2005 01:01 GMT One of my cats sometimes gets herself trapped in the cabinet under the bathroom sink. She noses open one of the doors and then can't get back out. When this happens, another cat (her cohort) calls the alert for me to come get her out.
Wayne Mitchell - 18 Apr 2005 04:45 GMT Hello, everyone. My first message in the group.

I don't suppose it's all that rare, though my own story is a little different, in that the free cat didn't actually point out her sister's location.
A while back we had two who were litter mates whom we raised from kittens. They were quite independent and didn't stick close to us except at night. But when they were young, Zubie sometimes would come around and be persistently under foot and needing attention. We always knew that was a sign that we should check the closets, Dad's recliner, the cellar, etc. to see where Flicka had gotten herself trapped.
And speaking of staring at the door, here's another story about that pair:
When they were still little enough so that going upstairs on their own was a struggle, we had occasion to close off for a while one of the downstairs rooms which was normally a permitted space for them. Zubie discovered the change at a time when Flicka happened to be upstairs. First, she sat down by herself and tried to stare the door open, as cats are wont to do, with that look we all know, compounded of incredulity, disgust and the expectation that the error will be promptly corrected. When that didn't work, she looked around for her sister and finally made the long trek up the stairs to find her and bring her down -- round trip perhaps fifteen minutes. She showed Flicka what the problem was, and the two sat down together to stare that door into submission.
Curiously, as adults the two didn't get along well at all. They would frequently hiss as they passed each other, and seldom spent much time in the same room except when eating.

Nidera Pidera - 18 Apr 2005 17:29 GMT >Have any of you witnessed this type of behavior between "siblings" when one >is distressed, trapped somewhere, or in some kind of trouble? This type of question will get a better response in a more appropriate newsgroup. I realize you're discussing behavior in general, but according to charter, this group is for discussing behavior as it relates to health. It's not for "cute cat stories and fun questions."
A copy of the charter may be found in many places on the net such as http://www.fanciers.com/cat-faqs/rpc-charters.shtml http://ratcliffe.org/cats/reorg.shtml
Thanks. THE Net Nanny.

CATacombs - 18 Apr 2005 18:26 GMT "Nidera Pidera" ?
"this newsgroup is not for fun questions and cute cat stories"??
Who are you and where did you beam in from? I guess you haven't been reading any of the other posts for the past 4 years..
Nidera Pidera - 18 Apr 2005 19:03 GMT >"this newsgroup is not for fun questions and cute cat stories"?? > >Who are you and where did you beam in from? I guess you haven't been >reading any of the other posts for the past 4 years.. I am Nidera Pidera -- THE Net Nanny. I thought I had said that.
No, I haven't been around for the past four years. Only for the last couple of weeks reading through a backlog of posts. It seemed to me that most people tried to stay on topic, or at least included an off topic notation in the subject. Ms. Catnipped did say that she was new to Usenet, and I thought that perhaps she was unaware that newsgroups do have charters that are meant to be followed to make newsgroups more useful and enjoyable for all. I didn't see where anyone had posted a link to the charter, so I thought I would.
As far as where I beamed in from, I don't beam. I'm an old-fashioned sort a girl. A high-speed broomstick would be more my style.
Thank you for asking.

CATacombs - 18 Apr 2005 19:20 GMT Well, I visited http://www.netnanny.com/ and didn't find anything on your name, I did a Yahoo search on your name and didn't find anything about you anywhere on the net..
Are you associated with Google Groups?
www.catkb.com?
Or does typing "THE" instead of "The" in front of "Net Nanny" confer some sort of status on you that people are just supposed to accept sight unseen?
Mary - 18 Apr 2005 20:03 GMT > Well, I visited http://www.netnanny.com/ and didn't find anything on your > name, I did a Yahoo search on your name and didn't find anything about you [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > Or does typing "THE" instead of "The" in front of "Net Nanny" confer some > sort of status on you that people are just supposed to accept sight unseen? Please do not encourage this fool. :)
CATacombs - 18 Apr 2005 20:20 GMT Oh..so there is no Nidera Pidera...Just someone with a vendetta against Catnipped.
There was nothing in that post that came close in off-topic compared with anything else that has been seen here. Don't know why Catnipped is being singled out for abuse.
Mary, you had no problem with the 2005 Diva awards post......
But of course, they included YOU........

Don't know why Catnipped is being >singled out for abuse. Of course there is a Nidera Pidera just as much as there is a CATacombs or a Mary. No different. I have no association with Netnanny.com, Google groups, nor CatKB. I am just another Usenet user such as everyone else here.
I'm not really trying to single out Catnipped, nor am I trying to abuse her. I'm sure she is a fine lady. I just didn't think she understood why stories about the cute things her cats do are more appropriate to the .anecdote group. I didn't get the idea that she thought there was anything wrong with either of the cats involved, just that she thought it humorous and interesting.
I really don't care about the off-topic posts except that it seemed there were some very knowledgeable people in this group that they were bothering, and it would be a shame if they left the group due to excessive chatter leaving this another anecdotal group. . I did check out the anecdote group this afternoon and found that she had already posted the same story there.. <shrug> I apologize if I have offended. I was only trying to inform.
Last but certainly not least, yes, you should take my word for it when I say I am THE Net Nanny.
Or maybe not.

CATacombs - 18 Apr 2005 22:29 GMT Now that makes GOOD SENSE. Now I see what you are talking about.
You're right, anecdotes should be separated out from cat issues that are more serious.
In the meantime, why don't they give Mary her own forum.
or...How about her own website?
Mary - 18 Apr 2005 23:00 GMT > Now that makes GOOD SENSE. Now I see what you are talking about. > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > or...How about her own website? Nobody can tell who you are talking to. Try a web search on "Usenet." CatKB is a portal out of the web and into Usenet.

Howsomever...Neither the identity nor the posting history of a message's author actually affects the quality of information in the message. If it's good information, it's good information -- and this was good information. The charter, now that I see it, does specifically discourage cute cat stories.
I've been lurking for a while, but as you note, off-charter messages aren't always flagged and discouraged within the group. So an occasional message pointing to the charter for this group and it's sister groups can only be a good thing.

They're not flagged because if you do, you're forever on the resident "free speech fanatic's" shitlist and your posts will be forever humped, you'll be stalked through Google for your posting history, and lies will be made up about you. Do yourself a favor and just ignore the OT if you don't like it. And ignore "Mary". LOL

I have never lied about you! You insisted that I must be "someone else" and Googled my posting history for months, coming up with nothing, then I happened to mention that I remembered you from your posts in alt.hackers.malicious and other troll groups. I never even Googled you! If you don't want people to know you posted in those groups, you could at least change your email so that you are not identified with them. (It was jlh@petitmorte.net .) You're still mad because you got, as your troll buds say, "spanked." lol
>Do yourself a favor and just > ignore the OT if you don't like it. The behavior of cats is not off-topic in rec.pets.cats.health+behav. The charter does not say what "netnanny" said it did. CN's asking if anyone else's cat behaves like her cat in a certain way is absolutely on-topic. "Wayne" and anyone else can post their little hearts out about what they would like to see here. And everyone who wants to post here may post whatever they like. Charters are only suggestions.
And ignore "Mary". LOL
Still the control freak. Poor Cheryl.
