Jackie's ear - any ideas what is wrong?

The poor girl. One thing after another. Last week I noticed that she
was scratching at her right ear, badly enough so that I took her to
the vet. I feared fleas or mites. I might end up regretting that it
wasn't those.

He said that there might be some sort of growth down in the ear but it
was too far down for him to really get a good look at. I suggested
that perhaps it was because of the prednisone gel that is going into
her ears. Maybe. He gave me an antibiotic creme just in case it was an
infection.

Well, she has now denuded the whole area around the base of the ear
and pretty much exposed the entire inside. I'll bring her back to the
vet on Saturday. I'll clip her nails again tonight. I'd best get the
reinforced concrete suit out of the closet.

Why not put on a funnel type collar (forgot what they called) until
she no longer needs to scratch?

They are called Elizabethan Collars and cats hate them.

I thought about that but I don't think that Jackie would be able to
walk with that on. She just isn't that strong. She barely gets around
as it is.

I would say that no cats like them, but they do serve a good purpose.
My cats have had to wear them and it was worthwhile. You can remove
the collar during periods of supervision.

Yes, but it isn't a matter of hating them. She has enough trouble
walking in a straight line. I'll try the softpaws first, those I will
pick up on the way home. Then we'll visit the vet on Monday.

I don't know if it would be any better, but when Bandit was injured they
gave her a soft plastic collar - it looked more like a cape than an
e-collar, but it worked the same way.

I have arranged to pass by the vet tomorrow and check out the coller
selection. It would have to be pretty light.

I get so sad reading about Jackie, because each of your posts
remind me of what Shadow went through, right down to this latest
ear problem. I read that sometimes IBD can involve candida growth,
and that could be evident in the ears. Shadow had polyps removed
from his ears once, but his ears being gooey was always one of the
many reasons he was at the vets constantly - in order to keep him
comfortable. In addition to keeping his hind end shaved during the
last year or so of his life, I also cleaned his ears after the vet
told me what to get. He hated both of these things more than he
hated his claws clipped, and he was a big boy so it was hard to do
things he didn't like. I've posted this a few times in the last
years, but once I read about the effect of B vitamins and yeast, or
candida growth. I also read that IBD cats don't absorb things like
B's if given orally but I thought I'd give it a try. Couldn't hurt.
After 6 months or so of giving him the B complex supplements (a
small portion of a human dose separated into an empty gelcap along
with his other meds) I noticed his ears weren't gooey any more.
They were once so bad that goo would ooze out onto his fur if not
looked after regularly. Yes, this is anecdotal.

I didn't think of Candida. I'll ask the vet about it. The aren't in
this Saturday! Best I can do is Monday late.

You might should put some Soft Paws on her.

Oh. That is a very good idea. That way she can get the scratching done
to feel better but not rip the skin apart. I'll get right on that.
