Almost lost Kami, but she's tough!!!

Way back when Kami was diagnosed with CRF, her vet said not to get to
upset about it because it's manageable, and he said her heart or
asthma would likely get her first.  What a charmer!  He does tell it
like he sees it, though, and I appreciated that.

Kami hadn't had any signs of asthma since we moved away, but she had
been having little tiny coughing episodes since we've been back.
After it's over she just continues what she was doing.  She's never
had to take medication for it.

Anyway, it was really super dry and windy here Saturday, and it was
one episodes after another and I could see she was getting really
worn out by it and the effort to exhale was getting ore and more.  I
took her to the emergency room Saturday night just in time for a
full-on heavy duty asthma attack.  She got hit with a shot of
Brethine and it opened her up right away.  Whew!  They let her rest a
bit and then they wanted to take x-rays and get some blood to check
her kidney levels.  Kami decided that wasn't going to happen.  I
could hear them fighting with her from the other room--banging
growling hissing.  LOL!  Good lungs there.  She felt better and
slipped from sweet Jekyl kitty into 100% Mr. Hyde.  They had to shoot
her with Torbugesic.  After checking the x-rays, she got a small shot
of DEX SP (steroid) and we were given pills of both drugs and $430
later sent on our way.

She was stoned all day Sunday... starting out to go...someplace...
and forgetting what she wanted to do.  Ate and drank a lot, wehich is
good, and the vet said to give her 50cc sub-q daily for the next
couple of days.  Mostly mostly she stared at the walls and other
kitty ghosties.

She's a little off today and wouldn't eat.  She acted like she wanted
to, but just laid in front of it.  I called her regular vet office,
found out my vet wasn't there anymore, but left a message for someone
to call.  After two hours passed with no call, I called her new vet
and she called back in 15 minutes.  She reminded that she didn't
react well to the fluids once before because of the addictive, and
that there was no reason to keep giving it to her because the meds
were fast acting and whatever they were going to do to the kidneys,
they did and moved on.  As long as she's breathing, let her be.

So, I finally came to work.  I had called my boss and told him I was
taking my payback day because I technically had Good Friday off, but
worked it because the client was working.  He said okay, but not to
tell anyone else.  I just told him if anyone asks I just took the day
because even if he said no, I still would have.  (So there!)  I
called him after talking to the vet and told him I was going in.  He
seemed okay with it, but only to do it if I felt Kami would be okay.
Awww, this is the guy who keeps joking about making her into a nice
stir-fry.  (You have to be there.  It can be funny.)

Did you ever ask your vet if a humidifier would help?  If not, please do so.
That helps me a lot when I develop a dry cough (not asthma, though) in the
winter -- it's a sure sign that the room is getting too dry.

I tried easing her symptoms a little with some steam.  I was actually
sitting on the floor in front of her spot on the sofa, blowing the
steam from boiled water her way.  When I called the emergency vet, I
asked if going out to get a humidifier would help rather than bring her
in, but he said not at this point.  I agree it might be a good idea
now, just to make it easier.  But really, everyone in the S.F. Valley
was having respiratory problems over the weekend.

Do you run one of those stand alone HEPA filters? I guess I'd reallly
consider both that and a humidifier. I'm glad she seems better.

Well, I'm only in this place until the end of May.  Her vet said that
she should be good for that long.  If her asthma is progressing,
though, when we get home we might invest in a few environmental
things.  Interesting, the emergency vet said to give her the Brethine
before the prednisone if she starts to have trouble and her regular
vet said grab the prednisone first.  Conflicts!  I actually trust Dr.
Tina a lot more.  Her opinion was they both affect the kidneys, so go
for the big guns.

I'm glad you got her there quickly and she's on the mend. What a
pistol she is!

Kami was much better when I got home yesterday, and even more so this
morning.  She's eating and being clingy, so I guess she forgives the
drama/trauma at the ER.  One thing that is pissing me off is that my
caller ID showed, or didn't show as the case may be, that the old vet
ever tried to call back.  I guess they thought Dr. Lancet wasn't there
anymore, and I'm not a regular client anymore, so forget it.  I really
lucked out finding Dr. Tina.
