I feed my cat Wellness, 5.5 oz can. Usually he gobbles it right up, any
flavor.

But this morning, he wasn't interested - I served him half a can of their
"Chicken + Herring". The other half of the can was served the night before,
he had eaten most of that.

I thought this flavor was a little strange - I mean herring is something my
uncle Bernie used to eat, with lox and bagels.

He ate a little, and then a few minutes later, barfed it all out. I cleaned
his bowl - and just didn't like the way it smelled. Then I gave him the
Chicken flavor and he was fine. Actually, reading this, he probably barfed
for some other reason.

But I don't think the fish flavors keep too well when they sit out..Also, I
read somewhere that you should not give fish to cats - they have trouble
digesting it - it's not their natural food.

Should I return all the fish flavors? (they also have "Chicken + Lobster -
another strange combination)

thanks

You know, with boys it is best to stay away from things with fish in the
first say 13 ingredients. Too many minerals. That's my rule of thumb anyway
since my Grant (RB) had urinary troubles and my vet told me fish doesn't
help.

Yes, I feed my cats very little fish stuff.   My previous cats could never
eat any of the
food that had crab, sardines, mackerel, etc. in it - they always barfed it.
Too rich I think.
My babies are Fancy Feast kits.  They mostly get Chunky Chicken, Beef &
Liver, etc.

There's a dried salmon treat my cats are crazy for... But they get it in
small quantities, sporadically.  As a diet staple, I stick mostly to fowl &
hooved animal based catfood.  I'd never considered the 'seafood is not a
feline's natural diet' idea before, but now that you point it out.....  I've
never seen a wild cat fishing.... Bears, racoons & other creatures, sure.
But never cats.  Makes sense.

Thank you.

My cats passed on half of their Wellness Chicken and Lobster, too, this
morning and then wolfed down some Wellness dry food instead so no more
canned fish.  Also I never get the Wellness chicken because they passed on
that, too.

I did it right the first time.

Interesting, my two also pass on the Wellness chicken and the seafood
flavors. They only seem to like the turkey flavor.

On a side not, Jake *loves* the Fancy Feast turkey and chicken
flavors.
You should have heard the grunting noises he was making as he was
chowing it down!!

First time I saw him literally lick his dish clean!!

I trust you say the thread regarding the improved nutrition
in FF since Nestle/Purina bought the company? Some of the
chicken and turkey flavors have as a first ingredient actual
chicken or turkey! The sign of a premium cat food. (As
opposed to "meat byproducts" or "chicken byproducts"
being the first ingredient.) Have you tried the beef flavors?
My cats love them. Even the salmon has salmon as a
first ingredient.

Used to be (maybe six months ago) that the first ingredient
in all FF flavors was some sort of byproduct. And, it used
to be that the "chopped grill" was the only flavor my
cats would clean their plates for. Now they do for most
of the flavors. You might want to compare the nutrients
in Wellness with FF to see how it fares, since it does have
the "flavor factor" that ensures your cats are eating well.

yes, yes I did!

Tried the grilled beef flavor tonight, and it was a definite success!!

Do you know if they have raised their prices since then?

I am not sure what to compare to be honest. I really don't think Fancy
Feast is *that* cheap. I paid about $0.42 for 3 oz. cans of Fancy
Feat, and $1.05 for a 5.5z. can of Wellness (and the cats *always*
leave a small amount of the Wellness in their dish, wasting it.)

The grilled varieties I have been trying of the Fancy Feast look and
smell pretty decent (like actual turkey or chicken) and like I said,
Jake gobbles them up!!

Do you know if it is only the "grilled" varieties they improved, or
all of their flavors/styles?

Not at my local stores! They are 44-49 cents a 3-oz can sometimes
2 for 80 on sale and have been for a few years. I buy them at
Kroger, Lowe's Foods, Harris Teeter, Food Lion and Winn Dixie.

I guess more than cost I was thinking of the flavor factor, meaning
less waste because the cats will actually eat it. But of course we all
need to get good values, too.

I don't know, but honestly, I could not find a single flavor
a few months ago that did NOT have byproducts as a
first ingredient and now there are many. Especially look
at the ones that say "gourmet," they almost all have
real meat or fish as a first ingredient.

There are lots I cannot buy because my cats only eat
all of the flaked or ground varieties--the chunks with
gravy result in just the gravy getting licked off. Little
monsters!

You know, my cats have been extra thrilled with FF lately, too. I wonder if
this is why?
They especially like the shredded kinds. They still don't like the sliced,
though.
Mine all turned up their noses at Wellness, too. I can't blame them. It was
pure mush. They like some texture, I guess. FF even looks more appetizing to
ME. <LOL>

I'm telling you, it is different stuff. If I had not just read the label a
few
months ago, I would never have realized it. Now my problem is that
Cheeks eats the salmon so fast she chucks it up!

Mine want flaked or ground food but they love the gravy. The so-called
"gourmet" flavors are usually ground that also has gravy.

Is Fancy Feast okay for a male cat who's had "struvite" crystals once or
twice?

Beats me. I would assume so, but IANAV.

Did you ask your vet? Your cat may be better off on a prescription diet, but
that's well out of my realm of knowledge.

I have found that if I keep offering different flavors their tastes can
change.

If your cat consistently vomits fish flaovred foods, he's probably
allergic to it.  It's not all that uncommon.  Also, be sure to store
unused cat food in the fridge - it wasn't clear if that was what you
were doing or not.

good luck,
-L.

I feed him half a can in the morning 8am - he usually gobbles down half to
3/4 of it..then nibbles on the rest till 8pm...Then he gets the other
refrigerated half. He gobbles down half to 3/4 of that..then nibbles on the
rest till 8am. Hi diddlee-dee - the Catty life for me.

I think the fish just doesn't keep as well. I have been feeding him the
meat/fish Wellness brands..but the weather has gotten a lot warmer, so that
might have something to do with it.

I did find this other thread, sort of related.

Wellness has a very "active" user group - lots of back and forth with the
company. Times sure have changed since I was a kid and we fed our mutt
Gainesburgers!!

He did fine on Gainesburgers, too, didn't he? :) A lot if the success
of the "designer" foods is marketing. More for the owners than the
pets.

There was a large can of dog food called "Vets"  10 cents a can -- really
stinky, but Rex loved it.  MLB

I have seen web sites that recommend feeding Gaines Burgers to
turtles.Apparently Quaker still makes them.

If he does not know to store opened cat food in the refrigerator
he needs a whole lot more than luck. What an asinine comment.
