Sammy's too big...

for her bed!

Health:  She certainly is a healthy girl!

Behavior:  *WHY* does she insist in sleeping in a bed two sizes too small
for her.  We have 6 other cat beds in the house, at least 4 of which would
hold her more comfortably!  ;>

Yeah, really!  ;>  And that's only one corner of one room.  The cats have
their own bedroom where the *bulk* of their toys are kept.  No, they're not
spoiled, not at all!!!  ;>

What I find funny about our creatures is which beds they seem to like.
(of course MY bed usually being the preferred bed...) but I have bought
different ones over the years and Luna only likes SOME of them. The one
in your pic seems to be one of the ones that Luna refused. LOL.

My Squeekers is like this.  He loves cardboard boxes and the smaller it is
the more determined he is about fitting into it.  It gets to be a kind of
tight squeeze at times trying to stuff that 17lbs into little boxes but he
manages.........LOL

17 pounds!!!  I thought Sammy was big at almost 15 pounds.  How old is he,
what kind of cat is he?

Squeekers is a plain ordinary orange Garfield type cat.  The last he was
weighed he was 17lbs and such a big baby.  My first cat Meowzer topped the
scales at 21.5 lbs.

When I first took Squeek in for his first visit Cindy held him our across
her arms and just laughed and said "you got yourself another big one here"
She was right...........:)  Now his 1/2 sister weighs about 8 lbs you'd
never know they had the same mother unless it was pointed out.  The two of
them are inserparable.

Hi,

Just wandering in here...looking for cat diet advice.  I saw your
posting and I have to say, Sammy doesn't seem big to me.

At least, not compared to what I'm used to.

Here's my Mischief, on "his" bed:
http://www.wideopenwest.com/~awesley5155/img/mischief_01.jpg

Here's another shot of him laying on the floor.  That's a standard
guitar next to him:

LOL!  Oh my, that's a *LOT* of cat!!!  ;>  But he is very handsome, even
though he's, um, "fluffy".

What have you tried diet-wise?  There are a few people here who have a lot
of experience with diet - I've never had to put a cat on one before now (and
I'm not sure is Sammy will need one or not yet).  I have gathered that you
don't want a cat to lose weight too fast.

I'm "pinging" Phil to this post - I think he may be able to help you.

Thank you.  He prefers to be called "big boned".  :)

> What have you tried diet-wise?

I have four cats.  I feed them dry food, I mix Kirkland Maintenance and
Whiskas.  Mischief is the last one to come to eat.  But he'll wander
over and finish off all the other cats' food.

Thanks.  I added Mischief's name to the thread, so I can find it a bit
easier.

LOL!  You have some gorgeous big boys there, Tony!

Have you tried feeding them canned?  Mine were on dry their whole lives and
did quite well.  Although I've heard others here say that their cats had
weight problems with dry, mine did not, they have never been sick or had
teeth problems, and their coat and eyes were always shiny and healthy.

However, my Bandit is now 15 and her creatinin and BUN levels were getting a
little bit above normal (quite common in older cats) and my vet suggested
feeding canned to help with that.  They're getting 1 (tuna-sized) can in the
mornings and 1 at night for all four of them.  They'll only sometimes eat
all of it, and they still get free-fed dry (I think anyone here will also
yell you it's better for a cat to eat *something*, even dry, rather than not
eating at all).

So, to sum up all the above verbiage, I would suggest trying to transition
them to canned if they'll eat it.

> LOL!  You have some gorgeous big boys there, Tony!

Why, thank you.  I took them in as adults when a very good friend was
having trouble keeping them.  I had already cat-sat them and was
hooked.

Here's another picture.  I wish I could sleep this restfully:

> Have you tried feeding them canned?

I'm starting to.  I used to feed the girls some canned food, but they
seemed to put on weight with the canned, at least one of them did.

Kahlua won't eat canned cat food.  My other cats love the stuff... he
won't touch it.

I've usually had no problem with dry.  I had a Siamese with some lung
problems.  For a while, I was having troubling getting her to eat.
After much experimentation, I found that canned chicken livers & heart
was her favorite.  However, with this hang, getting them to eat isn't
the problem.  :)

I understand.  The girls are certainly used to being free-fed dry food.
It would be simpler with just one or two, instead of a herd.   You
have four cats too, so you know.

Thanks for the advice.  I was getting that idea.  They got a can
tonight.

Well Tony, it looks like all the "experts" here (and I'm not talking about
Phil, who is busy with rescue work during kitten season) are busy off
flaming in off topic threads to chime in a try to help you with this.

Another shining example of "do as I say, not as I do".

I'm just sorry you and your cats have to do with their advice because of the
bickering and pettiness.

I tell you what, I'll go and google some of the things Phil has posted about
this in the past and post it in a bit.

Mary, you wouldn't be the first to wonder that.

Here's a couple more, with objects for comparison.  You can see how he
literally measures up on one.

Sometimes I look at him and wonder if my eyes have been doctored,

BTW, he's the most loving cat I've ever known.  He's such a happy guy.
Just purrs for the slightest reason.  Except, every once in a while, he
goes after Kahlua.  It's a sight to behold and feel, as the floor
shakes while 47 pounds of cat fight it out.  Hey, I have on those up
there as well.

Did you raise him from a kitten, or what is his story?
tonywesley@gmail.com - 21 Apr 2005 02:18 GMT
> Did you raise him from a kitten, or what is his story?

Mary, no, I didn't raise him from a kitten.  I dated a very nice woman
who had Kahlua and Mischief.  I cat-sat for them two or three times.  I
liked the boys and they liked me, coming to the door when I arrived at
her house.  The romance didn't last but the friendship with her did.

I was staying in an apartment and couldn't have pets.  About 2 1/2
years ago, I bought a house and immediately took in two adult cats,
Ernie and Bernie aka "the girls", who were looking for a new home.

  http://wideopenwest.com/~awesley5155/img/bernie.jpg
  http://wideopenwest.com/~awesley5155/img/ernie.jpg

I believe Bernie is saying "What do you want?  I didn't call you."

About a year later, my friend got married.  I believe her husband and
Kahlua didn't get along.  I had always liked Mischief and Kahlua, and
it's so hard to find a home for adult cats.  So I gladly took them in.

Sometimes four cats is a bit much.  For instance, I use three litter
boxes.  Mischief has a special one, it's the bottom of an under-the-bed
storage box.  He doesn't fit in a standard litter box.

And Ernie and Kahlua don't get along.  Sometimes they have a cat fight
at 3 am, in my room.

But I love them all.

I love tuxedos and tabbies. In fact, that is what my two are. I adopted
Cheeky my tabby when she was almost 2 and Buddha my tuxedo when
she was five. Are Ernie and Bernie actually girls or are they boys you
are teasing? ;)

Having cats is so rewarding. Having four cats or more really
is a LOT of work, though. You are a good cat slave! Thanks

I'd like to think so.  But I have an ex who'd give you a contrary
opinion.

They are girls.  Sisters, littermates.  I'm not sure their mother had
high moral standards, but who am I to judge?  I suspect they were Bert
and Ernie until someone discovered something.  Their formal names are
Bernadette and Ernestine.

hahaha! It does seem odd to me that cats can carry kittens
by different fathers. But it makes for interesting litters!

Wow!! These are some Big Bad Boys!!
CatNipped - 21 Apr 2005 16:08 GMT
OK Tony, sorry I took so long but I've been very busy at work (and it seems
others here have been too busy flaming in OT threads to take notice of your
need for help) - and I know PhilP has been busy doing rescue work with
ferals... So, I googled and got this that Phil had posted a while back
regarding diet for overweight cats (this is quoting Phil's post):

=================================================================================

The estimated energy needs of obese adult cats is 40 kcal/ kg of
desired lean body mass. Thus, a 5-kg  cat estimated to be 40 percent
overweight has a lean body mass of 3 kg, and a basal energy
requirement of 120 kcal/day.

Average weight for an adult cat is about 4kg (9 lb).  To get Angus
down to 9 lbs safely, you'll need to feed him a *balanced*, approx.160
kcal/day diet and allow 4 weeks for each pound of weight loss.  This
is just a guide.  Depending on his activity level and metabolism, he
may require more (but not less).  Before restricting caloric/protein
intake, discuss the plan with your vet.  A plan that works for one cat
can be dangerous for another.

As an alternative, you can switch (gradually) to Nutro Light.
Although the kcal/cup is 329, the fat content is about 1/2, the fiber
is double, and the protein is about the same as regular food.  Energy
needs are met from protein and slightly more carbohydrate.
Carbohydrate supplies only energy.  The advantage of feeding a Light
diet is energy and nutritional needs are met before or at the same
time satiety is reached.  The disadvantage is weight loss will take
longer and the gradual loss may not be noticeable requiring frequent
weighing to gage efficacy of the diet.

Once his ideal weight is reached, you can switch him to a normal
maintenance diet of about 300 kcal/day with normal levels of protein
and fat found in Nutro Adult Max Cat; a combination of about 75%
canned and about 25% dry is a good ratio.  The higher water turnover
achieved by feeding a higher proportion of canned is especially
important for male cats to reduce the risks of crystal formation which
can lead to urinary tract blockage.

Consult your vet before making any dietary changes.

Good luck.

Phil.

CatNipped, thanks for the info.  I understand work and all.  Flame
wars, you know, I've been as guilty as they come of getting into them
but I *try* to ignore them.

Thanks for the PhilP re-port.

Whoa.  What a Lake Woebegon moment.  Except for Ernie, all of may cats
are "above average."  And little Ernie hits the scales at 9 pounds.

Here's a few more of Sammy.  She's not nearly as big as Mischief, but she's
certainly bigger than average!  ;>

http://www.possibleplaces.com/CatNipped/Samazon/

I've decided to stop the kitten formula after tomorrow (when the last of it
will be used), so she'll start on the senior advanced formula with the rest
of my girls.  I'd rather not start her on the road to being overweight - I
know from personal experience it's easier to prevent it than it is to take
it off.  But I'm going to give my vet a call tomorrow just to make sure this
is OK for her.

Nice pictures!  My fiancee's son recently needed a coon skin hat and I
suggested he use one of the cats.  We joked, I said that if he could
rig a food dish on a brace on his neck, Mischief would stay up there as
long as the food lasted.  We decided it might cause spinal damage to
young man.

Yes, indeed.
