Justin L - 07 Apr 2005 21:13 GMT I went to visit the kitties for lunch today, and while I was eating a Twinkie, Elwood seemed to be really interested. He was pawing at it, and trying to steal it out of my hand!!
Are Twinkies dangerous for cats? No, I am not going to make it a regular part of his diet, but am wondering if a small taste will be harmful to him.
TIA
Justin

Sugar consumption doesn't trigger it, but those at risk diabetes need to monitor their consumption of carbohydrates and fats.

However, Carbs are basically sugar in another form. Sugar consumption (especially through fatty fast food & soda pop) in North America is a HUGE contributor to obesity... So, I was taking a shortcut to the same place.... Cheers. Mathew Butler to 2 kittens: Chablis & Muscat En Vino Veritas

In science and medicine, you just don't take those shortcuts.
From the National Institutes of Health:
People can get diabetes at any age. There are three main kinds. Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is usually first diagnosed in children, teenagers, or young adults. In this form of diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the body's immune system has attacked and destroyed them. Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes taking insulin shots or using an insulin pump, making wise food choices, being physically active, taking aspirin daily (for some), and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol.
Type 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes. People can develop type 2 diabetes at any age?even during childhood. This form of diabetes usually begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which fat, muscle, and liver cells do not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas keeps up with the added demand by producing more insulin. In time, however, it loses the ability to secrete enough insulin in response to meals. Being overweight and inactive increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Treatment includes using diabetes medicines, making wise food choices, being physically active, taking aspirin daily, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol.
Some women develop gestational diabetes during the late stages of pregnancy. Although this form of diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, a woman who has had it is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes is caused by the hormones of pregnancy or a shortage of insulin.
Note that sugar consumption is *not* a cause, nor is there a direct link; being overweight and inactive increases the odds, as does genetic predisposition. Physical activity can reduce the odds significantly, even if you are overweight. Once you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, you must manage your blood glucose levels.

As someone prone to diabetes, it's important to me to know the facts, and to make sure others do, and I wanted it to be clear that sugar does not in anyway cause diabetes.

Obesity and diabetes are not the 'same place' - one can exist without the other.
Phil P. - 07 Apr 2005 23:09 GMT > > Diabetes does not result from eating sugar (in humans, anyway). > > ummmm.... yes, it does. Adult onset diabetes is directly linked to high > sugar consumption. Diabetes in cats is caused by a relative or absolute lack of *insulin* - moron. Carbohydrates and sugars only exacerbate the condition in cats that are predisposed to it.
Did let anymore cats get hit by cars today or did you take the day off?

Though *more* toxic to dogs than cats, chocolate is *still* toxic to cats too. I don't think it's ever a good idea to let cats get used to "human" food. It doesn't meet their nutritional needs and tends to lead to overweight cats.

Twinkies were developed as an inexpensive treat during the Depression. Jimmy Dewar, manager of the Schiller Park, IL bakery, noticed the pans for Hostess' Little Shortbread Fingers were only used during summer months. Dewar decided to make use of the pans throughout the year by filling them with golden sponge cake and banana filling. Today's vanilla filling was the result of a banana shortage during World War II. En route to show off his new idea in St. Louis, Dewar saw a billboard for "Twinkle Toe Shoes" - and the name Twinkies was born.
I read that the Twinkie is 75 years old. (Well, not any personal Twinkies in my cupboard. ;)
I'll bet they're just laced with trans fatty acids!

I couldn't think of any other explanation but that you did not know what a Twinkie is. But it is such a fundamental part of American culture that it's hard to believe someone would not know about them. The Twinkie is the source of many jokes and urban legends, and I assumed it was known all over the world.
The twinkie is a creme-filled yellow sponge cake, and is the quintessential and lowest form of junk food snack cake, and it is ubiquitous (in North America, anyway). Twinkies have been sold since
Here's a BBC article, all about the Twinkie. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A516836
Twinkies are rumored to be an extruded product, and are said to have an infinite shelf-life (thus making them popular in your home's underground nuclear bomb shelter). Twinkies even have an entry on Snopes! http://www.snopes.com/food/ingredient/twinkies.htm There's a picture of one there, too.
A twinkie has has 150 calories, and is 25g of cabohydrates, 5g of fat, and 1.5g of protien.
If that's not enough for you, try a deep fried one! http://archives.cnn.com/2002/US/West/09/18/offbeat.twinkie.reut/
Your email address suggests that you're in Houston, Texas, USA. Now, let me ask you this: do you have SPAM where you are? (Where are you? I assume someplace outside the galaxy, where radio and TV waves have not yet propogated from Earth....)
CatNipped - 08 Apr 2005 00:59 GMT > > > > >I went to visit the kitties for lunch today, and while I was eating a > > > > > Twinkie, Elwood seemed to be really interested. He was pawing at it, [quoted text clipped - 43 lines] > (Where are you? I assume someplace outside the galaxy, > where radio and TV waves have not yet propogated from Earth....) LOL! Born and raised in New Orleans then moved to Houston in 1991. I think it is more the result of how I was reared and how I reared my children [weird by most people's standards] than where I was born and now live.
My family didn't really watch TV (we didn't even *own* one until I was a teenager, so I never got into the habit - which is why it perturbs me that DH has stocked the house with*FOUR* of them, one *65 INCHES*, for the two of us - one of whom doesn't watch). Therefore I never saw / don't see commercials.
And there was *NEVER* any "junk food" in the house. The only things we (or my children) were allowed to snack on was fruit or graham crackers if we wanted something sweet and nuts if we wanted something salty. All of our meals were made from scratch (momma's gumbo - YUM!) - [all New Orleans recipes start the same way, "First you make a roux...]!!
I don't even *go* down the "snack" aisle at the grocery - there's nothing on it that I ever buy, so no, I really didn't know what a Twinkie was though I'd heard the name. I don't know why I was picturing a Twinkie as a chocolate cupcake type snack!

You know, I do remember seeing one commercial that stuck in my mind (I think it was in the spring of last year). It was for Quizno's - a sandwich restaurant. It showed two very real-looking dead rats who only had animated, drawn-on eyes and mouths and guitars, who were bouncing around the screen singing in a high-pitched, grating, Mexican-accented voice. I noted it when passing the TV when DH was watching and I stopped short and exclaimed, "Who could *POSSIBLY* think that two dead rats is a *GOOD* image for a restaurant???! Somebody needs to fire their advertising agency!!"

Rowan has a serious thing for Peeps. I don't get it, but I have to lock them up when they're in the house. She EATS the Peeps. Go figure. (you should have seen my face the first time I left them on the counter, still wrapped, and cam home to Peeps all in the floor and half-chewed and the plastic all removed and shoved in a corner.)
I can't even eat Peeps in her presence or she won't leave me alone. She literally climbs me to get to them. *laughs*

Kira likes ginerbread cookies.
Several years ago, I bought some of the large gingerbread cookies from the bakery. There were 6 stacked on top of each other and then saran wrapped. I bought them and left them on my desk. The next day, I got home and all of the arms were gone! 12 arms, all missing. I looked around, and Kira came running and licking her lips, ready for more. After that, I took to hiding my gingerbread cookies.
She's also into garlic. She won't ouch sliced roast beef, but if I come home with garlic roast beef, I better be prepared to share. She will attack the bag to get at it. And she won't leave me alone.
