Yesterday I got a 7 week old female kitten everything seems fine, she's
eating and drinking and pee'ing. The thing that has me a bit worried is
she hasen't "pooped" yet I've had to switch the food she was eating to
a kitten formula geared toward her age group as she was eating her
mother's adult cat food before. Should I be worried or just give her a
day or two. She's been here 24 hours now.

Seven weeks is really too young for her to be away from her
Mom so you are right to keep a close eye on her. She may
not have been taught everything she needs to know. You may
want to do a Google search on raising young kittens.
I think I'd give her another day. Hell, I have trouble
pooping when I am in a strange place the first day!
Congrats on your kitten--we want pics.

I know 7 weeks is too young, and I had really wanted to get her at
around 8 or 9, but due to tragic circumstances regarding her mother
being mauled by a dog I've had to step in sooner than I'd have liked
to. She seems to know what her litter box is all about, and you're
right about the being in a strange place, that and the change in food
prolly has something to do with it. I'll give her another 2 days before
I panic and call the vet. She's got an appointment in 2 weeks for her
first round of shots but if I have to get her in sooner I will.
Thanks for your advice :o)

Bless you. I'm so sorry this happened. How many other kittens are there?

I'm envious as I have never raised a kitten, always having adopted
adults. You did a really nice thing. We'd love to see some photos
of the little girl if you have a link to a site to post, or if you post
some to alt.binaries.pictures.animals. What color is she and what
is her name? Was her mother a stray?

Give her a day or two. Otoh, if you begin to feel at all worried, don't be
afraid to call the vet ot make an appt. for her, just to be on the safe
side. Even if it merely serves to reassure yourself about your kitten. :-)

Just feed her kitten food. I went though the same thing with a kitten
( Cinder) even YOUNGER back in September 2004. She'll poop soon.
IMPORTANT: make sure she always has fresh water, in a small container.
If you give her a large container or dish of water she could drown in
it at that age, or so I was told by the local Humane Society.

What type of food are you feeding her? You may want to try a canned
food. My kitten was having problems with the dry food making him get
bloated and constipated.
Conga-rats on the kitten!

One more thing. I fed my kitten Mamalac, a kitten milk substitute at
that age, then mixed the Mamalac with wet kitten food, then switched
to wet kitten food.
The milk substitute is a good idea. Give her kitten food too.
What's her name?

This morning at 8:26 she pooped in her litter box with no help from me,
I was making coffee and heard her in there, looked down and TA DA!
Looks like a normal healthy bowl movement. I'm thrilled! Her name is
Pandora and if I could figure out how to post a pic in here I would lol.

I have been feeding her Nutrience Transition Kitten-step one and their
canned kitten food mixed in. Both food and water are small shallow
dishes made just for kittens lol and her litter pan is also small and
shallow so she can get in and out with no trouble. When she gets bigger
I'll upgrade her to a larger size box (Pandora and her boxes)
Heres a link to her picture hope this works...

Update on the mother cat and other kittens; Mom didn't die in the
attack but however was injured enough to have a 2 day stay at the vets.
She has about 15 stiches in 3 different places and is VERY sore. What
happened was somebody opened the back door she ran out and right into
the jaws of the dog that lives next door. The dog snatched her up and
shook her!
>From what I was told the other kittens are eating on their own and
useing mom's litter box so I think they'll be just fine. Pan is one of
4 kittens and the first to do anything. I call her the Alpha kitten.
She was born in a litter box and destine for world domination!

Just a suggestion, two cats are no harder than one and if you don't have any
restrictions, adopt a sibling. There is nothing as fun as two cats, they
keep each other busy (trust me, this will become an issue) and they are way
better than TV to watch.

I have weaned and litter trained literally dozens of bottle babies. To
help with the litter box training, leave some pee and poop in the box.
The scent will attract her to come back to it time and time again.
After about a week, you need not leave anything in it again.
She's very cute, BTW!
