About 15 years ago we had 11 cats and were fairly poor. So, I made most
of my own cat food and they loved it. I would boil either livers,
kidneys, or hearts in water then grind it in a food processor and
thicken with a little oatmeal. they loved it. I would do this about
twice a week. They got this mixture once a day for dinner. their diet
was also supplemented with dry food.
I have no background in nutrition so don't know how balanced the diet
was but, the cats thrived. As we got richer (ha, ha) we switched to
canned food but I've always wonder if they were better off when we
weren't better off.

Our idea of a "food processor" was one of those old-fashioned meat
grinders.

Yes, we make our cats' food ourselves.  They are on a homemade raw diet
and doing beautifully on it.

I'm about ready to put Pearl on a homemade diet or at least mostly homemade.
She seems to have digestion trouble now and again. Right now we are in a
bout of diarrhea. Usually she is ok, but everytime she has been to the vet
they say she has gas (which I have not noticed at all, so maybe it is
because she is stressed.) At any rate, she is not too picky an eater, so I
think it is possible.

I remember Softie, the loveliest, gentlest cat, and the last one my parents
had at home. He lived on a diet of mainly chicken necks and home-made cat
food made from gizzards. Sadly, he should not have done so. He had enormous
digestive problems, constantly suffering from severe constipation, having to
be surgically cleaned out several times. Eventually, and very sadly, he was
put down.

My Mum still says she feels guilty about Softie, that she can't help feeling
it was his diet that did this to him. Knowing now what I know about how
fragile some cats' digestive systems are (I have one with very mild IBD), I
suspect she's right. But we're talking about 20 years ago, here, before we
knew anything much about cat nutrition.

But I guess the moral of this story is, if you're feeding your cat a
home-made diet, make sure you know what you're doing, or you could be
harming it.

Groovy...  Um.... I was kind of hoping for a slightly more detailed
description of the food, portions, etc....

Mathew:  if you have a library near you 'The Natural Cat' by Anitra Frazier,
which I know has been updated for the 'modern world' *grin*, has advice, not
only for diet, but other things as well.

The breakdown for a raw-food diet is:
60% protein
20% vegetable
20% grain

This may have been changed since the printing I have in 1990.  The diet
section is quite long, so I can't really add to this :)  You have to ensure
that your cat will get all the required vitamins, minerals, amino acids,
including taurine (Very important for cats.)

I have noticed several "cooking for kitty" cookbooks in print - - - I hate
cooking for myself, let alone the felines *g*

And! ta-dah!  here are some sites that should help youout!  pet-grub is
pretty good, with a lot of recipes.  feline future gives you a good idea of
nutritional content and warns against the use of some products, such as
pork.  I think you will get some use out of all of these . . . I hope!

Mathew, ignore that last link. It's for cats with chronic renal failure,
which I highly doubt your kittens have.

Don't know the first two so cannot comment on them.
