I was looking at the Houston Humane Society's web site to see if they do
spay/neuter cheaper than S.N.A.P. (they do, marginally, but I don't know if
they'll charge extra for a pregnancy spay). I was paging down their list of
services/surgeries and guess what was listed???!!
*DECLAWING*!!!!! With a note that they do front claws only - oh how kind of
them!!!!!!!!!
The *HUMANE* Society of Houston does declawing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thus my favorite quote:
"If a person who indulges in gluttony is a glutton, and a person who commits
a felony is a felon, then God is an iron." ~ Spider Robinson, from
MindKiller and later, revised, from DeathKiller

I can't believe that 1) they are doing declaws, but 2) they are doing it for
$40!!! Why do a declaw at a reduced cost? Doesn't that just encourage
people to declaw? This makes no f'ing sense!!

I LOVE Spider Robinson's work (Especially a short story collection called
'Melancholy Elephants')...
And my cats will ALWAYS have claws.

The people of Houston, as a general rule, also think it's just fine to set
calves to running, chase them on a horse, throw a rope around them that
forcibly brings them to a dead halt from running full-speed, jump off the
horse and tackle the BABY (despite its size) animal by twisting the neck
until it yields and falls onto its side/back. They procede to tie three of
the legs of the animal together and whoop for joy.
And they claim it doesn't harm them a bit.
(good ole' rodeos...)
Why am I not the least surprised that they don't mind the notion of declawing
a cat?

Or cinching a rope around a bull's "family jewels" to make them buck.
Now that's GOTTA hurt.

Doesn't happen that way. A flank strap is *nowhere* near a
bull's testes -- they're dangling much father back.

I haven't heard of this being done for quite some time. It went out of style
with dog training techniques that were so abusive the dogs couldn't start
training until they were 6 months old. If any rodeo still does this, they
should be reported.
The more modern way is to use a bucking strap, which is just plain irritating
to the animal (like a tight shirt collar or belt is on you). It's nowhere
near their testicles.
Most bulls don't need any help bucking. They just plain don't want to be
ridden. If you watch rodeos at all, you'll see that most bulls don't even
have bucking straps on (the rope is around the bull's chest similar to where
a girth is on a tacked-up horse and it's just there so the rider can hold on
to something) and they stop bucking the minute the rider is thrown (they may
chase the guy, though, which is always fun to see -- bull REVENGE <LOL>).
It's the horses that sometimes don't want to bother. You can tell they have
"help" when they keep bucking AFTER the rider has been thrown. Some horses
will buck with little "encouragement", though. I think those kinds of horses
find it fun to watch a rider land in the dirt. Note that many horses used in
rodeos have been trained to buck.
A properly done bucking strap doesn't harm the animal in any way. Only
abusive people make the straps hurt the animals. It's like prong collars or
remote training collars on dogs -- done right by an educated person, they're
a great tool. Done wrong, they can become abuse. That can be said of a great
many training tools. It's not the tool, it's the person using it. Even a
"gentle leader" could be used to hurt a dog if the person holding the other
end were of a cruel nature.
/ not anti-rodeo per se; just anti-abusive rodeos

The anti rodeo folks seem to want to perpetuate the myth that the
bucking strap puts pressure on the bulls testicles. Anyone with their
own eyes and an open mind can see the bulls balls flopping freely in the
air as he bucks, with the bucking strap well forward of them. In my
years around rodeo, the only balls I have seen injured in bullriding
belonged to a couple different cowboys.
I do tend to agree with the poster who felt that the calf roping event
is cruel, and it is the one event I would like to see it done away with.

That's appalling! Hmmm. Changing the subject a bit, would it be
possible to withdraw all of our business from vets who declaw
(unless there is some rare medical need for such a thing)? Maybe
if folks did that and said WHY they were doing that...

I did. When my new vet asked for my cats' records the old vet called me to
find out if there was a problem. I told them.

I think we ALL need to do this. I do recall when I was scheduling
Mingy's neutering, they asked whether I wanted to have him
declawed too. Thank goodness, I had read about that and knew I
most certainly did not. I protested, and they still were under
the impression that this was just a fine thing to do. I really
need to find out whether they have wised up in the meantime.
Hugs back at you!
