My cat, a 3 yearold black longhair cat is potty trained. But lately she has
been going on a rug my mom brought back from Romania. I make sure that her
litter box is always clean, and she uses it, but she uses the rug also. How
can I get her to stop?

The few times I had problems with cats eliminating in inappropriate
places I confined the cat to a room with cat box and food and
water for a few days to get the cat back into the habit of
going in the box. I have found that some rugs apparently '
have a smell that makes them attractive to cats for elimination.
I would take up that Romanian rug if it were me, or at the very
least treat it with an enzymatic rug cleaner that might get rid of
the scent that is attracting the cat. Above all, do not punish
your kitty--instead, every time you hear her scratch in the box,
tell her GOOD GIRL! You would be surprised how far
praise will get you. But first try the confinement. A laundry
room is perfect. And be sure to visit her and be sweet to
her while she is confined, and be sure to position her food
and water as far from her box as possible.

Roll up the rug and put it away.

I would try putting a piece of packaging tape upside down where she
goes on the rug. You should be around in order to help remove the
tape if necessary. You will be the "good guy" coming to her rescue.
After two or three encounters, she will avoid the area. Then hope she
goes in the litter box instead. You will have to avoid the packaging
tape for a while. The cat might learn quicker than you do. Sometimes
I leave it there until I learn to avoid it, just because.
Good luck.

I gave my cat a treat everytime I saw him go in the box. Eventually I
cut out the treats and the behavior remained.

When a cat suddenly stops using the litterbox the *first* course of
action is to take your cat to the vet and have her checked for a urinary
tract infection. You can try all the behavior modification tricks in the
world, but if the cause is physical nothing will work and the cat will
suffer unnecessarily. UTI's are very painful and cats will associate
that pain with the litterbox and find somewhere else to go. Usually it
will be on soft things such as rugs, bedding or clothing. Please take
your cat to the vet ASAP.

When a cat changes locations for no reason at all there actually is a
reason. Usually it's a UTI and she needs seen by a vet ASAP.

I had assumed the OP had already done that, my bad. That really is the
first thing to do.
