Hi,
MAGI came back home from the hospital yesterday and looks very good
after her surgical experience - apart from the shaved fur and stapled
surgery scar.
She got a 2/3 closure of an extra-hepatic shunt and already we've
noticed an improvement in her symptoms. She will still be on the Pheno
& lactulose but is able to tolerate a higher protein diet. Mentally is
the most obvious change and she seems more alert and less depressed
than before. We'll know for sure if this holds up once she has had a
few days to settle down being back home.

No no! 2/3 ligation is *good* - very good! In fact its *safer* than a
complete ligatation of the shunt because it reduces the risk of portal
hypertension.
The blood vessels in the liver can't handle the sudden dramatic increase in
the volume of portal blood that gets diverted back to the liver after a
complete ligation of the shunt. A partial ligation allows the liver and
vessels to gradually adapt to the increased blood flow. She can have the
shunt completely closed in a few months - so don't worry about that.
I'm so happy you went ahead with the surgery and that it went so well!
Best of luck!

That is what the surgeon said. They tried full-closure but the portal
pressure rose too high so they dropped back. They are confident that
her liver will adapt and our instructions where to get her weight up
and to strengthen her further in the meantime.
My disappointment was really for MAGI that she would be having to go
through this procedure again. I should put up a photo of how she looks
now.
Tonight she was bouncing about all over the place - springing about is
a better description. BISCUIT is running after her in play and MAGI is
like a roe-buck. Amazing to watch!!!
I'd swear her face and eyes are more expressive and I think we are
starting to see the emergence of a mellower and more inquisitive
personality.
She has to go to the vet on Tuesday to get these surgical clips
removed so we'll she how she responds to her 'mortal enemy' ;-)
She has a huge appetite and is eating everything in sight. I bought
fish 'n chips on the way back from work and she was really chomping
down on the cod!
The hospital want her back in three months for more tests and to
complete the ligation. In four weeks she is to have another blood
anemia done. I'm going to try to get her to get into eating liver and
desiccated liver for the haemoglobin-iron from next week.
I'm really pleased we have done this after all ...

Amazing thing at the vets - she normally gets really nasty when she
sees him but she was the total reverse. I'd never have believed it
unless I'd seen it. She was sharp and alert to her environment -
looking up at the lights and the coloured posters on the walls - she
hardly noticed the vets as I held her while he took out the staple
clips. Very mellow easy going cat now.
She is still eating for Scotland but the liver did not work - too rich
maybe and unfamiliar. She took a look, gave a lick and then wandered
off and ignored it completely. Well you can't get everything, I
suppose.
I pleased ANA is doing well and even attracting the attention of
potential adopters now. Two PSS cats that have done well.
