Cat Forum / Health and Behavior / March 2005Still Toe Sucking
On April 8 Sammy will be one year old. She's huge, http://www.possibleplaces.com/CatNipped/Sammy_Mommy/. She's not as fat as she looks in these pictures, she's just sort of scrunched up here and her hair is *LONG* (I can still easily feel her ribs). She's 24 inches from the tip of her nose to the base of her tail and her tail is an additional 14 inches. She weighs almost 15 pounds. For comparison that's me holding her and I'm 5'6" and 135 pounds. Yet she still jumps up on my lap so she can suck her toe, http://www.possibleplaces.com/CatNipped/Toe_Suck_Movie/ (turn up the sound on your computer and you can hear her smacking and purring)!!! Is it all > wrinkley after? ;) LOL, no, just soaking wet (and whichever part of my clothing she is laying on is also soaking wet) afterwards! She alternates between the left back foot and the right back foot (she has a hard time fitting her whole self on my lap without falling off so she often has to adjust herself when she overbalances! ;>). Yep, and being a bit obsessive/compulsive myself (OK, more than a bit) I can sympathize with her ritual before the actual toe sucking takes place. My brother's cat extends the TOP leg when she is curled up on her side. She holds it in place with her front paw extended over it, and that paw also kneads at the same time. Was your girl seperated too early from her mother? My brother's cat was an orphan so we just attributed it to that. But she has been sucking her back toe for 15 years now and has never stopped. But, come to think of it, given her size, she could have been a bit younger. They tell me that Sammy is probably mostly Maine Coon, they tell me that Maine Coons keep growing for up to *3 YEARS*. My father used to have a Maine Coon - one big, l-o-n-g cat! His tail was as long as his body, and he could stand on his hind legs & reach up to a standard 36" countertop, to snag stuff off it. She is as large as TuTu who is a mixed tabby. TuTu's tail is not as magnificent. MLB |
