I just adopted a female cat - 7 years old.  She is fixed or spayed I
believe it is called.  Can she still spray?  I have seen her back her
hinder up to a wall, tail high in the air, and then shake it like crazy.  I
rush over to see if she sprayed the wall and it is dry.  What is she doing?
Thanks for any help you can provide.  I am a first time cat owner.

If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day
and a half, how long would it take for a monkey with a
wooden leg to kick the dill seeds out of a pickle?

That is what I call 'happy tail'. ONe of my girls does it when I am in the
bathroom. She seems to like the cool of the porcelain, but it is definitely
when she is purring, happy, has my undivided attention. However, since this
kitty is new and it is not in the same situation of purring and being pet, I
wonder if it is just an instinctual thing.

Thanks!  I assume this is what is happening.  She has my undivided
attention and is purring like crazy.  She doesn't stay still for me to
really get a good scratch in before she rubs against the wall or couch and
then does her tail thing.  I'm hoping it is and will just stay "happy tail"!

OH yeah, well then it is the same thing.  Yup. Happy tail. THey don't all do
it, but some do and I have found they are usually girls.

Demelza does it, but it doesn't involve backing up to a wall.  Just the
super-quivery "I'm so happy I can't stand it!" tail.

Yes, spayed females can spray.  Jennifer (RB) started doing this when she
was older (15 or 16).  Unfortunately for me, the wall was not dry after her
visits, but at least it didn't have a strong smell.

I have a friend whose cat does this.  My friend uses covered litterboxes, so
the cat ends up peeing on the side of the cover.  She wonders if that little
habit is why the cat ended up at the shelter in the first place.  With her
litterbox solution, though, it's not a problem.

Er, obviously this isn't the same as what you're describing, because her cat
does actually pee when she does that, and yours doesn't.  Sorry, I didn't read
your post carefully enough.

My little 4 month old kitten does the same thing and I'd like very much to
know exactly just what she is doing.  lol. She is also spayed, and when she
does it, she doesn't emit anything, no smell or liquid, just shakes her
little tail and rear end like crazy!
   HELP!
