Greetings All,
I have a 5 year old neutered male cat who is a very special part of
our family. Monday morning, we noticed strange behaviour - not
eating, lifeless, depressed, glassy eyes, etc. He also urinated
outside his litterbox which he has never done before. We monitored
him over the next 24 hours and since he did not get any better we
brought him into the vet first thing this morning. The vet said he
had a fever and was concerned that he was not eating so she
hospitalized him with antibiotics, iv, and pending bloodwork. I'm
supposed to call at 3:00 today for an update. I have been reading as
much as I can over the past couple of hours and have seen these
symptoms associated with fatty liver, FIP and the like, and I'm am
sick to death with worry for our guy.
Are these symptoms also common with non life threatening illnesses?
I'm so hopeful that he'll immediately respond to treatment and get
back to being his normal self, but is this realistic considering his
symptoms? God forbid, should I be preparing myself to possibly lose
him in a matter of hours or days?
Sick with worry,
Jill

There are all kinds of treatable and more serious things it could be. Just
plain not feeling well could cause the urinating. Has he had shots lately?
Good luck and keep us posted on the bloodwork.

Good that you got him to a vet. It could be a simple urinary tract infection.
But I know how awful it is when they're sick. Try not to worry to much until
you have some feedback from the vet. Healing purrs to your kitty and please
let us know how he's doing.

Hi Jill,
He does sound very poorly. I hope the anti-biotics work and gets
better soon.

Jill have you got some cimicat or lactol to give him in a syringe, every 30
mins 10ml and did the vet give you any glucose type stuff to add to his
water? which you can also syringe down him drip by drip. Aloe Vera capsules
and vit c to build up his immune system. Kittyvite is good too.
give him plenty of cuddles and I really hope he get better soon
keep up informed. good luck

A bit of an update:
Called the vet this morning. His blood test results are not back yet.
He's still on IV and the technicians said he ate a littel bit this
morning. The tech I spoke to did not know if he still had a fever. I
feel a bit better knowing he ate something, but still am very worried.
I'm going to visit him on my lunch break today and bring him some of
his favourite treats and try to get him to eat. Hopefully the test
results will be back when I go and I'll get word on his fever.
Somebody asked if his shots are up to date. They are not, and if he
has caught something that could have been prevented by immunizations,
I will never forgive myself. :-( He's strictly an indoor cat. Could
not sleep last night...feeling very worried and horrible about not
having his shots up to date. My husband is also very upset...this cat
is his buddy.

Another update:
Not very good news. Blood tests show kidney problems. At this point
we don't know if it's acute or chronic. Kitty was nibbling on a bit of
food yesterday and the fever is down but the vet wants to keep him
hospitalized for 2 more days on IV fluids. After that she figures
we'll know if it's acute or chronic. Is it possible that it's just an
infection rather than a failure? Can anyone give an opinion on the
likelihood of him pulling though?

Fever points to infection.
Body temperature can be low with kidney failure.
Of course, kidney infections can result in kidney failure.
