I have a male cat, Speedy, about 4 1/2 years old. He deveoped a flea
bite allergy about 1 1/2 years ago. The sratching and overgrooming left
bald areas on his legs and under his tail.
Vet gave Speedy an injection of a steroid for the itching and said to
put Frontline Plus on every month. Worked fine and all bare areas filled
in like new.
A few months later small bald areas began showing up again even though I
had been using Frontline every month.
A second vet said the same as the first, with the same recommendations.
Speedy got another shot, and some pills for a couple weeks. The hair
grew back again.
A few weeks ago the bald areas began showing up again. I do not like the
idea of getting Speedy another steroid injection. I did get some of the
pills, Triam.
Now to the point. Are any of the less expensive flea killers as
effective as Frontline? Does anyone use the products available in
department stores? There are several that come in small vials similar to
Frontline for only about $8 for 3 doses. I think Hartz Mountain has one
of these products.
What's the differece between these types of flea killers and those like
Frontline that cost $39 for 3 doses?

Most of the over the counter flea killers (for example Hartz) have also
been cat killers. Don't use them. Stick with the Frontline.

Hartz has been known to create big problems - please don't use their flea
products.
How about Advantage?

There are non-chemical things that work on cats for fleas. Brewer's yeast
tablets, diamacetous (sp) earth...I had a cat who got the flea allergy
dermatitis and my vet had said not to use the
chemical flea stuff.... ??? Carol

The difference would be that Frontline is safe and effective and the
cheap stuff not so much.
Frontline is available for less online. I've ordered from
http://www.entirelypets.com/ and was satisfied with their prices and
service.

Do not use Hartz flea products. Look up the lawsuits against them for
killing cats. http://www.hartzvictims.org

The difference is they work and won't kill the cat.
If you still have fleas after using Frontline consistently, perhaps
the fleas have become resistant to it. I would switch to Advantage or
Revolution. However you will probably need to continue the steroid
injections.
Is this your only cat? Are all your animals being treated for fleas?
Does your cat go outdoors? I'm wondering where the fleas are coming
from.
As far as price goes, it is possible to treat all the cats in a
household for the same price as one if you buy a large dog size tube
of Advantage, Frontline or Revolution and split it. The ingredients
are the same.

I buy a box of borox (with the laundry detergents) and lightly
sprinkle it onto the rugs and then sweep it in. Borax absorbs
moisture, and therefore dries out small bugs such as fleas, ants,
spiders, etc. We only do it 3 - 4 times a year, and we haven't had
fleas for about 10 years now with this system.
