I'm a wreck, I'm a total wreck!  My hands are shaking so badly that when I
was getting a saucer down to give Bandit some mineral oil in tuna water, as
per doctor's instructions for the constipation, I dropped it - shattered
it - and cut up my finger all to h*ll!

The vet said she had a *SMALL* spot on her shoulder that was removed.  Don't
click this link if you are easily disturbed, but this is what my poor baby
looks like now:

http://www.possibleplaces.com/CatNipped/Bandit_Boo_Boo_Three/

All of her belly skin was removed last Wednesday.  Then today most of her
back skin *AND* most of her side skin had to be removed.  She looks like
Frankenstein's cat!!  I'm not worried about her appearance, I would love her
no matter what she looks like, but it *HURTS* me to see her looking like
this - I can't even imagine the pain she must be in.  Oh gawd, I gotta go, I
need a good cry!!!

Lori, it actually looks BETTER than it did. And it is bigger because they
had to shave around it. I'm so sorry for you and Bandit. I know she will
heal up better. I'm sure she will. HUGS.

I agree w/ Karen - that she actually looks better than before.  Lots of
shaved skin & stitches, but the areas where her burns were now look clean &
healthy, not gruesome - to me.

Oh, the poor thing!
TED gave you painkillers for her, right?

Purrs to her for a swift recovery...she's using up all her bad luck, now,
though, so maybe she'll be extra lucky from now on.  :)

Well I'm just crying for both of you. God I really
hope it will all heal up like nothing ever happened.
Rhonda - 19 Mar 2005 01:45 GMT
Lori,

I know all the shaving and stitches are a shock, but I think she looks
beautiful. She does not look like Frankenstein's cat -- she is a
gorgeous, fluffy kitty. She looks so content and relaxed.

That shaved part looks nice and white, and her hair WILL grow back!

I'm sorry you have to go through all of this stress, I really am. I
think you're both going to be fine.

Purrs, purrs, purrs.  That is all we can do at this point.  Trust that
Bandit's strong spirit will prevail and that he will heal and have a good
life.

best wishes.   MLB

Her skin looks much better, and she looks pretty content. Don't make
yourself too crazy, 'kay?

Oh my lord.... Are all these from the burns that were the result of your vet
using a new heating product??  I apologize I haven't been following your
thread all the way through. If the answer is yes, I would file a lawsuit!!!!

Someone needs a serious a.s kickin'.....physically or financially!! It seems
like the manufacturer is at fault (defective product), but the fact that the vet
just got rid of it instead of sending it back to the manufacturer for testing seems
rather suspicious. And the fact that she's been quite willing to eat all the
medical costs could just be an attempt to avoid any legal action.
Either way, someone screwed up BIG TIME!!!
I'd start by finding out who made the damned heating pad and contacting them
directly.
Rhonda - 19 Mar 2005 09:36 GMT
Yep, someone needs to contact the source -- whoever made those stupid
things. I would have hoped the vet did it, but it doesn't sound like it.

I have no way of checking on her veracity, but the vet said she notified the
manufacturer, the surgeon who recommended it, made an FDA incident report,
and told every vet group online and offline that she's a member of.

There was another cat at this office that this happened to (I don't know how
badly the other cat was burned), so I know they're taking it seriously.
Again, I can't be sure, and I may be being naive, but the vet seemed almost
to the point of tears when she was telling me that she was all tied in knots
about what happened.

I'm sending my husband in to pick up Bandit's pain pills this morning and
I'm going to have him talk to them (and I'll ask him to ask about the
manuracturer).  He can be a lot more forceful than me, so maybe he'll find
out something I didn't.

I do hope that's true. It would be a shame to see that happen to any other
cats. It's a shame that it had to happen to Bandit.

That may very well be true. I just tend to be somewhat of a skeptic.

LOL! It works that way around here, too. My wife always says that she
represents the "diplomatic branch" of the family, I represent the "military branch",
and the cat represents the "executive branch".

I do photography as a small business, and several years ago, I placed
an order for poster prints with a mail order company. It had been a
month since they had received my order, and I had less than a week til
the show I needed to have them at. I called the company, and they were
no help at all. They'd send the order when it was done, don't know
when, and no, they won't send it faster unless I pay more.

Unknown to me, my dad called the company back, called himself some
fancy title, and they responded much better to him. They sent my order
the next day, by second day air. I was very impressed.

I may know i am being misled, but I'm not too good at speaking up for
myself in person or on the phone. I need to be more prepared or I
forget the points I want to make.

But once, a computer store took advantage of my mom. Charged her for
several upgrades, but only did one of them. I was so angry, I called
the store manager and chewed him out for taking advantae of her. He
tried to claim that everything listed on the receipt was in the
computer, but realized very quickly that I knew what I was talking
about. He took care of the problem right away. I never realized I
could be that forceful when needed, but geez. Don't mess with my mom!

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt, I really would.

I suspect the Vet is sick at heart over this.  She may have had careless
helpers.  After all, it is her reputation and career at stake.  When
appropriate, ask her what response she has had from the manufacturer.
Keep records.

Purrs for Bandit's complete recovery.   MLB

It would certainly be worth finding out the name of the manufacturer so you
can submit a letter and photos. And you yourself can then submit a letter
and photos to the FDA too. I would do that just for peace of mind. I'm not
so sure sueing does *any* good in the society we live in, but I would
certainly feel better mentally if I could make sure the right parties knew
what happened from me as well as the vet.

Sure you can blame the manufacturer... but the fact of the matter is, either
a technician or a vet should have been checking the heat on that thing to
MAKE SURE it was not getting too hot.  Someone should have been checking up
on her post-operatively, and if someone was doing this, they would have
noticed the heat (more than normal!!!) coming from the cage.

I certainly agree with you that someone screwed up in properly monitoring
the pad while it was in use. But, as a mechanical engineer, I think someone
did a poor job in the design of a "fail safe" system. There should have been
several thermal switches to cut off power if things overheated. It's not
rocket science, just a simple design problem.
Some engineer needs a swift kick in the a.s!

I agree. If any device calls for idiot proofing, these heating pads
would be one.
