Bandit's Second Burn

CatNipped - 16 Mar 2005 14:28 GMT I need you guys' help. The vet told me to watch the burn closely for any change of color or appearance and if there is I was to take her in right away so they could do surgery. Well, the burn looks different than it did, but it might be that it's getting better. For those who can take the grossness, please take a look and let me know what you think.
Here are the pictures I took right after I found the second burn:

Here are the pictures I took just a minute ago after I washed the burn (which is why her hair is wet) and right before I put the Silvadine on it:

You know, I talk about how bad Bandit is, and it's true, she's bad... *BUT*...
For the last two weeks I've been wrapping her up in a towel and shoving awful tasting liquids into her mouth every 12 hours. I've been opening her mouth and throwing bitter pills down her throat every 8 hours. I've been holding her down and spraying water on an extremely painful burn every 6 hours and then rubbing stinging paste into the burn afterwards. I've been tying a ridiculous bright blue collar around her neck that makes her trip over her own feet. I keep taking her back to the TED who did these awful things to her!
And as *soon* as I put her down on my bed after any of those things she waddles over to me, gives me head butts and starts purring.
It's very, *VERY* humbling!

Does it feel any cooler? I don't know - I don't touch it except to put the Silvadine on it (and only after washing my hands for 2 minutes beforehand). I spread the Silvadine pretty thickly, so I can't tell anything about the temperature of the burn. I'm so afraid this one will get infected like the last one that had to be removed surgically that I'm trying to keep it as germ-free as possible.

Oops cringing at my spelling mistake above (red not read), lol
Well redness is usually a sign of infection and the second photos look far less red than the first set. Mind you it would also depend on how 'wet' the skin is from washing. I think the second set of photos shows quite an improvement though, however IANAV. :)

It still doesn't look quite like a burn to me, but what do I know?

I still can't understand how she got burned on her tummy and back, but not elsewhere - even if the thig was wrapped around her, which BTW, I have never heard of any vet doing. It just doesn't add up.

I'm assuming she was on her back on the heating pad while they were doing the dental cleaning and on her belly on the heating pad while she was recovering. *OR* the second burn happened when they were doing the surgery on her belly (if they lied to me and did have her on a heating pad while they were doing that surgery).
Do you have any idea on what else could have caused it?

For what it`s worth, when I had surgery, the iodine (or whatever yellow antiseptic surgeons use) made my skin flake off, just as if it had been sunburned, although it wasn`t raw....

Spot - 17 Mar 2005 03:27 GMT I tend to agree. My first impression was it looks less red and better. If you aren't seeing any yellowing or signs of puss or drainage I would think this change is good.

Best of luck with Bandit, I hope she heals soon.

Hemmaholic - 18 Mar 2005 14:32 GMT I'd still like to hear the Vet's explanation as to how Bandit got such a large "burn" from a heating pad, especially on her back. The cat would have had to be totally sedated to lie on a heating pad turned to max long enough for it to inflict a burn of that size and severity. Is it a certainty that this is a burn and not something else, like "ring-worm"?
Cats are pretty remarkable animals; they know when we are doing things to them to help them feel better, and they certainly pick-up on our own feelings and stress over a situation, which is what they react to. Cats have an amazingly high pain threshold, as Bandit has shown you.
With all of the great care you've been giving her, I am sure she will be back to normal in no time and be able to get rid of the atrocious blue collar! At least this one is more like a cape and not one of those awkward "cones".
God Bless you, abundantly!

She said they were using new heating "bags" that were recommended to them by an animal surgery. They've since thrown them all out and are going back to using fluid-filled thermal blankets, so other kitties won't have to go through what Bandit went through.

Thank you. I just dropped her off this morning and they'll be doing the surgery in about an hour. Hopefully this will be the end of all her problems and she can recover completely.

.oO rach Oo. - 17 Mar 2005 00:36 GMT It looks slightly less red or 'angry' as my mother used to say. Are there any blisters or pus on the burn? To be on the safe side, I would take Bandit to the vet anyway just to make sure. I don't think it's an emergency but I would say urgent.

No, no blisters. The vet saw the second burn on Monday and she has an appointment for tomorrow at 4:45PM. And when I went to the vet today to pick up more Silvadine I showed her these pictures. She said that it looks like the burn is contracting, but she may still need surgery to remove some of the burn - but she won't know for sure until she sees her tomorrow. When she saw the pictures she said I could safely wait until tomorrow to bring her in.

Sorry that there could possibly be another surgery for Bandit. That kitty deserves a badge of bravery! Come to think of it, you do too!
When this is over, take yourself to Dairy Queen. On the way home, stop and get Bandit a big container of catnip.
Hoping for good news tomorrow,
Rhonda

And when I went to the vet today to [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > > > CatNipped Connie - 17 Mar 2005 03:14 GMT Hi catnipped... In my experience, when it comes to a burn or wound like this, actually red is much better than yellow. Yellow tissue is called eschar - or dead/dying tissue - which must be debrided ("surgery"). A burn needs granulating tissue which is red - which shows a good blood supply to the area. However it should not be a beefy red - which is not good... just a good red/pinkish color - which I do not see in these pictures. It looks likes there is alot of eschar sloughing off of this burn, so they probably will remove it surgically... HTH

Isn't that amazing? You would think they would never want to see us again, yet they still show us their very best. Sometimes, they are far better people than we are.

Lynn - 17 Mar 2005 18:27 GMT Poor Bandit! Your heart must be broken seeing your baby this way. Thank goodness you're a loving and attentive meowmy! Purrs for healing.
CatNipped - 17 Mar 2005 20:10 GMT > Poor Bandit! Your heart must be broken seeing your baby this way. Thank > goodness you're a loving and attentive meowmy! Purrs for healing. It really is breaking my heart! It makes me nauseated to think about the pain she much be in. And yet she comes to me to give me head butts and purrs - even though I just hurt her by putting Silavdine on the burn!
