On my vet's advice, I bought a baby scale to weigh my cat every month -
this way any weight changes that are not visible by eye would become
apparent much more easily.
My cat is average size, 3 years old, and weighs 11 lbs, 11 ounces..Is this
normal? He has only been in my home 4 days...He does eat some, but hasn't
had a bowel movement...He does not gobble down his food.
My guess is that he is just still nervous. Also, his previous owner died -
maybe he is used to his old food..except there is no way of finding out
what that is... Maybe his former owner will come to me tonight in a dream
and tell me!
He doesn't look bad, though, and is very affectionate and sits on my lap
and purrs...

It's like people: depends upon his frame. For one of my cats who's a bit on
the petite side (who weighs about 8? pounds) he'd be way too fat; for the
other cat who's a generally larger cat (a bit tubby at 14-ish pounds) he'd
be just about right, maybe a little on the thin side.

It varies. Maynard was 9 1/2 to 10lbs in his prime. My new boy is only
3-4 years old, and he was 12.3 lbs when weighed at the vet. He is big
and fluffy, but not overweight.
Can you feel his ribs? They shouldn't stick out, but you should be
able to feel them when massaging him.

As long as he is not dehydrated, I would not worry yet. When Jay Jay's
diarrhea stopped, he went 3-4 days without any bowel movement. He was
eating every day, and he probably did get a little plugged up, but his
system reset and he went back to normal.
I would assume you have new foods and thenew situation is also
stressful, so he just needs some time to adjust.

Jay Jay as purred on occasion, and he follows me around like a dog.
But he he won't sit on my lap or the bed yet. I do see that he is
relaxing and going along with the whole routine more and more. He is
already a very mellow cat, but he seems to be even more so now.

> I use this as the best way to ascertain whether a cat is a good
weight without being over (Funny, me and him are both somewhat "ample"
but my cats are fit, must be all that galloping about they do!).
Speedy Joe, Isis and Fugazi were all "large" cats. Okay I didn't think
of them as large because I had them from kittens but other people told
me they were huge. Redunzel and Sarrasine are much smaller but they're
perfectly healthy, ribs not visible but you can feel them when you
stroke them, their mother incidentally was apparently tiny so perhaps
it runs in their family

My female cat weighs 18 pounds and is considered normal for her breed
and age. What is "normal" can vary quite a bit.
