That really is a good one. One thing that jumps out at me
is that raw meats have lots, baked have less, and boiled
has the least of all. It must boil away in the water. Thanks,
Lauren! I am building quite a nice file on cat nutrition.

I found this interesting in this one:

"A deficiency of Taurine in cats will cause Central Retinal Degeneration
(eye lesions) resulting in total blindness within two years if the
deficiency is not remedied, Dilated Cardiomyopathy (enlargement of the
heart's chambers resulting in thinner, weaker heart walls) and reduced
reproduction in queens and growths in kittens."

I have kind of assumed that Jasper likely went blind because of a
taurine deficiency. For the past several years with his former owner, it
seems that he was eating a mostly human diet...food from old lady
Virginia's plate. When lucky, he would get a packet of Friskies. Not
that Friskies is some great cat food, but at least it is cat food and
has some taurine in it!!!

Also, one of the things that was noticed in Jasper's ultrasound was that
he had a slightly enlarged heart. This would also seemingly go hand in
hand with the taurine deficiency.

Poor Jasper.

(as he sits on the floor purring after a long petting session by daddy)
(heh. heh. heh.)

Makes sense. He is lucky you came along when you did, but has
also clearly been blessed by a genetically strong and sound
constitution to have done so well for so long without proper
care.

I covet Jasper! He is cool and weird and beautiful. Please kiss him on top
of his shiny little wedge-shaped head for me. 8)

Here are 4 new pics of him.

It's the first 4. :) I love the ones of him curled up on my bed. Oh
heck, I love all the pics of him!!!

Jasper rules. Even with his f.cked up toe, cracked tooth, blindness AND
deafness. At least he doesn't have oozy butt anymore! WOoT!

Oh, now this is not a happy cat at all! ;) He is at a nice weight. It's
good his medical problems did not hurt his appetite enough to make
him lose. It seems good to keep some meat on them when the are
older.

Yeth, the oozy butt may have just been a bit too much character
to have around permanently!

Isn't he the bomb? The story is, his elderly owner died
and a friend asked kitkat to take him. She walked in
and he was on the hospital bed the lady slept on at
home before she died. He was blind and deaf,
possibly blind from the lady's inability to get out
and get him cat food, or whatever reason she
fed him people food. Kitkat tells the story better,
you can go to Google groups and search
rec.pets.cats.health+behav for "jasper"
and read all about him.

The story goes like this...I'm a sucker!
The end!

No just kidding. But yeah, Mary got it about right. Though, we did not
know that he was blind and deaf when we took him home. He can see and
hear a LITTLE...but not much. Like, when my husband vacuums...Jasper
will sleep right thru it, but Luna, my other cat, will hide for hours!
Also, since he cant really see...he doesn't see you coming...so he has
no idea he is in the way...and people who aren't used to that trip over
him all the time. Poor guy, getting stepped on and sh.t! I imagine that
Old Virginia probably rolled over him quite a bit when in her wheel
chair. He just squeals and gets on with life. He is an absolute joy and
I feel LUCKY to have him!!!!! Especially after almost losing him a few
weeks ago...I really realized how he has crept into my heart! (I've only
had him since August!)
