My newest boy Nipsy (long haired, likely part Maine Coon, maybe 1 1/2
years) was apparently drooling a lot yesterday. At first I thought he
was just very sloppy at the water fountain but after I cleaned him up
it started again. Also I noted that either him or Espy had thrown up
earlier, which is the first time I've seen that since Nico died in
June. Then it was a regular occurance.
Nipsy was behaving normally except for drooling but it was clearly
time to call a vet. Too late for the regular vet so I called the
emergency guys (Long Island Vet Specialists) and they said that it
didn't sound like an emergency and recommended that I talk to the
regular vet in the morning, or bring him in if he started behaving
oddly.
This morning I noticed him sneeze and he had a blob of mucous on his
nose (which I thoughtfully removed). Maybe something of a cold? His
nose is cold and wet as normal, and his ears are hot, also normal for
him. He was dry this morning with no sign of drooling. Perfectly
playful during the night. I could honestly do without that. I'm
developing bags under my eyes from this one.
So here I am at work, waiting for the vet to open. I went through the
previous posts here and an earlier thread on cat drooling indicated
likely dental problems which seems to fit the scenario. Oh well, I'll
see what the vet says and either bring him in tonight when I get home
or leave early if necessary.
I took the precaution of closing the basement door last night, so
there are less places to hide if he starts feeling badly. I'd likely
never find him down there...

Any chance he tasted something bitter?

A very good chance. He was in the backyard with Espy for about an
hour. I wouldn't be at all surprised.

That could be it. How´s he doing now?

We're back from the vet. Nipsy has excellent teeth and gums (no plaque
at all), very clean ears, and top-notch fur - no fleas. Nothing wrong
at all. No drooling either. The vet said that he is a wonderfully
healthy cat, about 1 1/2 years old.
He apparently ate something that he was allergic to or otherwise
disagreed with him but he's fine now. I have no idea what it was that
he ate but I'll try to keep a better eye on him when he goes out in
the future. It isn't a big yard but it has lots of stuff growing all
over. He might even have gotten stung by something. He does have a
habit of chasing bees. Hey, who could resist? Big plump things kind of
hanging in the air. I hope he's a quick learner.

Good to hear that! :) Yep, cats learn quickly. They usually get stung
once and never again.
