Does anyone know from where cats, both male and female, spray from?  I know
they're not spraying urine, so where does the spray come from?  Thanks.

It is urine sprayed on vertical surfaces.

Thanks, Gail.  But doesn't the male (and maybe the female?) back up to spray so
how does the urine spray in that direction instead of frontwards?

I'd like to know that too.  I see Shamrock do that in the litterbox.
Stands up with his front paws on the edge of the box, his butt in the
air and pee straight backwards.  I think even though it is the
litterbox, he is marking it.  He doesn't do it often and usually just
after the boxes are cleaned which leads me to think he's marking.  He
overshoots sometimes, too.  Gets the wall.  :|

I just know that they back up to a vertical object, lift and twitch their
tails, and spritz some urine marking it. Just like the "big" cats do.

Yes.

| so how does the urine spray in that direction instead of frontwards?

A cat's penis points backwards, not frontwards.

(As for the obvious followup question, it isn't a matter so much of
backwards and frontwards as it's of upwards and downwards.)

Thanks, Arjun.  I guess you learn something new every day :)  Females can spray
too, right?  Don't tell me theirs is backwards too.

LOL!  Glad I didn't have to ask.

They _are_ spraying urine.  To be sesquipedalian about it cats are
retromingus, which means they pee backwards.  They also do a lot
of tail vibrating at the same time, which means to me that they like to
do it.  A cat can really hose down the object he is marking.

Thanks, William.  Both my cats, a male and a female, are fixed.  When they get
excited or are happy, they shake their tails.  But fortunately, nothing comes
out.

If you had allowed your cat to live out his life with his gonads the
way God intended him to, you would have the answer to that question.
Why do you even care...?
