Sapphire's outlook darkens

Sapphire, 15 year old black cat,  had her sonogram which verified a solid
mass throughout her liver and a kidney.  According to the vet- inoperable
and probably cancer.    I would do anything for my Sapphire and asked him
about chemotherapy so now she is back at the vet for a biopsy to definitely
say cancer and find out if it is the treatable kind.  If so the vet will
send us to a special care hospital to see an oncologist.  He is having his
own 2 dogs cared for with them.

Today's biopsy will not be done with surgery but with another sonogram and
anesthesia.

I want to see the tumors shrink, her appetite and energy increase,  so if
chemo can do this we will go with it.

Barb - I am so sorry the sonogram showed this.  I know your desperation,
believe me.
My heart goes out to you & my thoughts and prayers are with you and
Sapphire.
Take care. Email me anytime.  Carol

Thank-you for the thoughts.  I know this whole chemo business is a long shot
but that's all we have.

I keep reading Phil and others say that cats tolerate it better than
humans, so keep your chin up. The best thing is that Sapphire has a
Mom who will do the very best for her. Many cats do not. She is
a lucky girl.

It may be a long shot, but otoh, it may work.  If the biopsy does show
cancer, the oncologist will give you a better idea of the prognosis, &
details about the chemo if s/he thinks it'll be a reasonable route to try.
Chemo will not cure the cancer, but if it works it could put Sapphire into
remission, so that she'd feel well for the extra time it gives her.  Cats (&
dogs) tolerate chemo - re: side effects - much, much better than humans do.

Barb I'm sorry the diagnosis is so serious. I really hope the biopsy
will come back benign.

We are sending "hope" purrs for a cure for Sapphire.   MLB

***I'm sorry to hear the (potential) bad news. I think that you are doing
the right thing for her, Barb, as long as it's not too invasive or stressful
on her. I'm sure she is very bonded to you, so she's strong. I would really
encourage her eating (and drinking) as much as possible to keep her fluids
and strength up. Buy her a good liquid vitamin, and give it to her once a
day. Try to coax her along with her eating and drinking water as best you
can with *anything* she likes to eat or drink.

I used to buy my Blue sliced deli turkey breast, top round roast beef, ham,
etc, etc. Veal or Ham (Gerber brand) babyfood or tuna juice, red salmon,
etc, were also good for helping to stimulate Blue's often fickle appetite. I
used to warm his babyfood slightly in the microwave for him because he
seemed to smell it better.

All in all, it seemed that the more food I offered him in my constant
attempts to get him to try to eat (and through my many answered prayers) and
he would eventually find something he would* eat, and this would help to
stimuate his appetite, and he would rebound and rally.

Please continue to keep us informed with Sapphire's progress. May she
rebound, and rally and live for years longer.

My Tasha used to only eat Gerber Ham!!!
And she lived to be 16-1/2.

Funny you should mention that because although Sapphire has been walking
away before finishing her canned wellness she has been all too willing to
scarf down the turkey breast I've been giving her, ham, too.  She drinks a
lot but I do agree the more she can eat the more strength she will have for
what is ahead.

Thanks to all for your encouragement. Yes, I do know that cats and dogs can
tolerate chemo overall better than humans.  If she can stay comfortable
while on it that will be fine.  No drastic invasive measures.

Hi, Carol,

Today Sapphire is barely hanging in there.  She is bony, little appetite and
unhappy.  I put her in bed upstairs last night where she always sleeps and
she gets up early to go down and make.  She won't use a litter pan upstairs
and just walks around it.  In the morning I had to look all over for her and
she was sitting in the bath tub.  When she saw me she meowed a lot and I
know she is so sad.

She ate no cat food but had some baby food lamb and some deli ham.  Wouldn't
eat deli turkey or tuna this morning.  She did come up on the counter and
last night she was up on the six foot high wall unit where it's nice and
warm from the lights.

She is now sitting on a kitchen chair with her little best friend on the
other chair.  They are still washing each other but the she does a lot less
of washing Pickles.

I am still waiting for the biopsy results to see if she will be able to be
helped by chemo or anything at the oncologist.

This waiting is so difficult.  Thank-you for your caring,

Barb,
I'd like to add my purrs to the many extended to Sapphire. I hope she pulls
through this with a good quality of life. Is she able to urinate? You
mentioned that she is having some difficulties with the litter box. You
also mentioned that she has been in the bathtub. These things are two of
the many signs of urinary blockage. If she's feeling ill or depressed she
may be less willing to make the trip to the box. When cats hold their urine
too long, it can become concentrated and bacteria can grow. Make sure she's
peeing ok. Love to Sapphire.
Barb - 16 Mar 2005 22:22 GMT
Sapphire is peeing okay.  I had said she wouldn't use the box I had just put
upstairs for her convenience.  She still goes downstairs to pee.  I just
thought I could save her a trip.

**Hi Barb,

I was really glad to read this update because I was wondering today how
Sapphire is doing.  I'm very sorry to hear that she is not doing well.
Sounds like you are monitoring her health well and watching her carefully.
Continue to make sure that she is drinking frequently water/ milk, cat milk,
tuna juice, whatever, so she will stay hydrated and keep her strength.
Please keep us updated.

Barb - 16 Mar 2005 22:22 GMT
Thanks, ML.  There really isn't much I can do while waiting for the lab
results.  Sapphire takes frequent little sips of water.  The results are now
in and the vet will discuss them with me tomorrow morning.

***Barb,

I'll be thinking verrrry positive thoughts regarding Sapphire and you.
Please let us know what the bloodwork says tomorrow. Hopefully she will be
able to heal and be fine with time.  How is she today? Is she peeing in her
box? Has she been in the tub again?  How's her appetite, is she eating
better/more? I had to hand-feed Blue, coaxing him to try to eat or drink
often, until* he would start to show interest in food and begin eating on
his own regularly.

So,  BTW, what does Sapphire look like?  I love her name! :-)

Hi, ML,

Will create a new post about Sapphire now that she has entered a new stage.

She is a black cat with a white heart under her neck.

Hi Barb,

How's our favorite kitty doing today :-)?  Is she eating and drinking okay?
Please continue to keep us posted each day if you can. Darn, I have bonded
with her and yet I haven't even met her :-)! She really sounds beautiful,
inside and out.

W/ love, concern + prayers,

ML

I hoping that you & Sapphire get good news tomorrow. All my fur babies are
sending good thoughts your way. >^.,.^<  My Toma girl is dying of kidney

Kathy,

That's hard.  I lost my Moonshines to kidney failure and she actually died
at home because she just drifted off to sleep.
