social eaters?

Meghan Noecker - 11 Mar 2005 10:20 GMT I was curious to know if anybody else has a "social eater".
Maynard didn't used to be, but a couple of years ago, I discovered that he doesn't eat by himself anymore. He needs an audience. He just wasn't eating enough when I was at work, so I had to make an extra effort to keep him eating when I am home.
Now, I have Jay Jay, and he, too, is a social eater. He eats every time I go into the bathroom (that's where the food is), but he leaves as soon as I do.
And he's been meowing a lot. So I decided to follow him as that seemed to be what he wanted. I followed him upstairs, through the living room, upstairs again, and into the bathroom, where he promptly chowed down. I flossed my teeth..trimmed my bangs..waited - still eating. I decided to leave. I got about 5 steps out of the bathroom, and thunk, he jumped off the counter and followed me back downstairs.
I think he wants me to watch his back while he eats. But basically, he won't eat unless somebody is there in the room with him.
Does anybody else have a cat like this?

ElvisRocks - 11 Mar 2005 13:25 GMT My remaining cat, Randi, is like that now since Elvis crossed over. All of a sudden he wants an audience to eat AND he's turned finicky!!!! He won't eat this, he won't eat that... it's kind of funny really. He SO needs some new brothers/sisters. I've had other cats in the past that prefer to eat while you're standing there and also petting them as they eat! Carol

Lizzie definately is, though she *will* eat without an 'audience' if she's *very* hungry. Weeble sometimes want's company, sometimes wants solitude, I guess it depends on his mood.

Monique Y. Mudama - 11 Mar 2005 15:51 GMT > I was curious to know if anybody else has a "social eater". Back when Oscar was free-feeding on dry food, she would often start chowing down when DH and I sat down for dinner.
My dog Puma (RB) was also free-fed dry and was also a social eater -- he ate when we ate, for the most part. When we were out of town, the friend dog-sitting for us would have to stick around with him so that he'd eat. I don't think she had to actually be eating something, but Puma wanted company.

No, but I have a dog like this. Madison's food is in the kitchen. She will grab a mouthful of dry kibble and bring it into the living room, spit it out on the floor, and eat it piece by piece. My mother was horrified. *rofl*

I've seen my cats take the food to go, one piece at a time. But that's funny with the dog.
Sometimes I have to sit with my dog, but she's spooky, so a bad thunderstorm or fireworks will require a "bodyguard" while she eats. Most days she is fine.

Mine's just a velcro dog. She just really, really wants to be in the same room I'm in. I think she took notes from velcro kitty Rowan. *heh*

It's common in dogs who are rescues. I have a dog who was dumped in winter and he was a velcro dog for years. She's over it now, pretty much, though.

Puma (dog, RB) only liked some of the Kibbles n Bits pieces, so he'd take a big mouthful and spit out the ones he didn't like ... all over the kitchen floor ...

Fugazi (RB) used to sometimes stuff herself with biscuit and then barf all over the kitchen floor before returning to the dish for second helpings! We think she got rid of the first lot so she could eat some more

Not exactly, but my first cat, Sabina, really liked it if I petted her while she ate. ;-) She'd eat & purr at the same time. If I stopped petting her, she'd turn around look at me, as if asking why on earth I stopped. Takes all kinds... <g>

If I stopped petting > her, > she'd turn around look at me, as if asking why on earth I stopped. Takes > all kinds... <g> If I'm around, one of my cats will always "ask" to eat. If I pat him, he'll head to the food bowl and sit there and look at me. Then he'll meow at me. I have to come over and pat him by the food bowl. Then he'll eat. Same sort of thing if he'd lying around minding his own business, and I decide he needs his tummy scratched. He'll thoroughly enjoy the tummy rub then, as soon as it's over head straight over to the food bowl and eat.
I think he's confused food with love ;-)
But he has no trouble eating whenever he wants when I'm not around.

But I noticed she would always barf after eating while being petted. I wondered if that was the cause, so I stopped the petting while eating and this decreased the barf episodes a whole LOT! Sometimes, she still walks over to the food bowl, watches to see if im following her, and sticks her little rear end up in the air. Cracks me up!
