I have a kitty, about 8 years old, who has seemingly very itchy skin.
She is a long-hair, and has licked off all of her fur on her inner back
legs and her lower abdomen. We have always treated her (and our other
cat) for fleas monthly with Frontline, and we have changed her food to
a no-wheat, no-corn type food that was recommended by the vet. She
seemed to do a little better when I gave her a small dose of Benadryl
(antihistamine), but she seems almost "obsessive/compulsive" about
licking herself. Anyone have a cat that does this or any suggestions
about what else we could try with her? Thanks for your help...

She may well be obsessive compulsive. The syndrome is labeled--psychotropic
alopaecia. I have a cat with this who is now on Elavil. It is helping.

How was OCD diagnosed in your kitty? Truly, that is how my kitty acts!
What is her Elavil dosage?

Well, I've done the whole route of prednisone shots, which do help. I've
also changed diet to eliminate grains. Nothing helped.
So I went back to the vet and he showed me a picture of the classic
symptoms/pattern of hair loss from his book. So we are trying elavil. I'll
check the dosage, but she does get it twice a day.
He diagnosed her personality perfectly. She is "low man" on the totem pole
in a house of 11 cats. So she is stressed, and the grooming evidently
alleviates that.
The hair is beginning to grow back. I even caught her lying on the bed,
back to back, with the most aggressive cat!

Thanks Betsy - actually, that is a somewhat similar situation in that I
have a male cat who is definitely the dominant guy. They do tolerate
each other but my inside kitty, the one with the problem, was the ONLY
cat until about 2 years ago when the stray showed up on our doorstep
and we took him in. If you could find the Elavil dose, that would be
great. Thanks again, Betsy ~ Patty

Look here:
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/eosinophilic_granuloma.html
And do a simple Google search on "eosinophilic granuloma."
It is not life-threatening, and can be controlled with a simple
shot of Depo Medrol every few months. However, look into
the side effects of Depo. One is diabetes with prolonged use.
Good luck. My cat has this.
