GrapplerGurl - 10 Mar 2005 07:07 GMT Just want to thank everyone for the calming words about George under the bed. Yes, he's eating well, everything is fine, he just likes chillin' under the bed. I do have another question I'd like to ask, I've bought George 16 2inch furry mice over the last 5 months, I can't find any of them. I've looked in the obvious places--->under the bed, couch, stove---> and occaisionally find one but the fact is I'm missing all those mice. He's never shown signs of ill health so I don't think he ate them. Any ideas?

He probably has a special hiding place, and he will eventually bring them back out again.
When Kira was a kitten, she stole my socks. I found myself down to only 3 pairs of socks. I couldn't find them anywhere. I searched my bedroom, the laundry room, behind the couch, etc. Never found any. I finally bought a bunch more.
Then, several months later, I awoke to find socks everywhere. On the bed next to me, on the floor, on the stairway, on the living room couch, on the cat tree, in the bathroom, etc. She must have spent the whole night carrying socks all over the house.
As far as I know, she never took them again. And I never found any hiding place.
Chase also hides his toys. I have no idea where, but they disappear and reappear.

You know, it never occured to me that my cats might be intentionally hiding things. I thought they just got lost in play. Now I have to wonder.

My mom's cat used to steal jewely....and leave it in other people's rooms. So, I would find my mom's bracelets under my bed. Thankfully, she knew it was her cat doing it, and not us. When she was missing something, we would all go check our beds and known hiding spots.

Jmagerl - 10 Mar 2005 16:26 GMT Mr. Bonkers stashes them everywhere. They usually do not reappear. Theres about 7 dozen feather tail mice floating around the house right now. Every once in awhile we will move a piece of furnature and there will be 2 or 3 but where the heck did he put 84 of them? They're pretty cheap at the local Menards ($3/dozen) so when he runs out we just buy another pack. And this doesn't even get into the missing scrunchi balls.

One would think they do eat them the way they disappear! But I think you will find that the toys, along with anything shiny and fun to play with like pens and earrings, wind up in the strangest places now that you have George. That said, if you ever do think he has eaten something that may harm him you will certainly take him to the vet.

I don't know what it is about those mice, but cats seem to stuff them away so well, they're never found again. Have you checked other oddball areas--like between couch cushions, near heat vents, under the fridge/washer/dryer? They are small enough to hide easily.

I found a dozen fur mice under the stove and refrigerator when I noticed Hodge would lie there, staring at the floor under them intently. I got the long rod one of his cat toys is on and dragged them all out. And hid them. <g>

They'll probably show up again - in maybe 2 years. Really. ;-) They could be under the refrigerator, just about *anywhere*. But eventually you'll see one that you had thought was lost forever. Or once you find one, you may find all of the others, too - he may have a whole cache of them some place you've yet to discover.

Rhonda - 11 Mar 2005 01:15 GMT If you find the answer, let me know!
I buy the sisal mice with the feathers. I have no idea how many I've purchased over the last year. I can only find one today.
Once in awhile I find them behind some furniture. I think the cats toss them up in the air and they land a strange place.
One semi-feral kitten we had used to hide toys behind a door, or under a couch (all in a row.)

GrapplerGurl - 11 Mar 2005 03:22 GMT Hi all: I decided to take a really good look in my utility room, I found a flock of 7 mice under the washer. There's not much space between the bottom of the washer and the floor. George would have really had to push hard to get them under, I had a heck of a time getting them out. The washer was one of the first spots where I thought the mice might be except I didn't think he could fit anything under their. Well, I was wrong. Thanks for help.
P.S- As we speak 5 of the 7 mice are missing again, he he he.

My guys are forever hiding their mice. I've found them in shoes, boots, boxes, under the refrigerator, stove, my dresser, in the hall closet, behind the entertainment center, under the couch, in the litter box, under living room chairs .... if there is an under to something then I've found a mouse there. That said the majority of them disappear to someplace I haven't discovered yet and sometimes turn up later sometimes not.
Losing 16 mice over the last 5 months sounds about right to me.

Somewhere in my apartment, there are many DOZENS of missing mice & puffy balls. I have a lot of furniture that is very low to the ground and I'm assuming most of them are underneath. I'm just too lazy to pull the furniture out and find out for sure. I also know plenty of them are under my stove. No way to pull that out away from the wall, but I have used the plastic wand from the Cat Charmer to fish some out. Once a year or so I will move the dresser, armoire etc and pick up all the dusty toys. Then I put them all in a bag or drawer and Otto will get one a day until they've all gone missing again. He no longer gets the relatively expensive Rosie The Flat Rat ($3 each) because those go missing almost immediately.
Same thing happens at work, but there are a million places for the toys to disappear. Most of those places are not accessible, so they're gone forever. Stinky no longer gets any Rosies, or Folkmanis mice finger puppets (her absolute favorite) because they're pricey.

But I watch him while he plays w/ Rosie & then put her up in-between playing sessions. As you say, she's too pricey to keep replacing...
Personally, I loved the saying that was on her packaging; something like:"Rosie Rat is really flat, but your cat doesn't care." ;-) They weren't kidding; he loves Rosie just the way she is!

As you say, she's too [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Cathy Otto & Stinky adore Rosie. I had never bought any of the cats fur mice before getting the first Rosie. I bought one because Stinky's last Folkmanis finger puppet had gone missing. As much as they love Rosie, they actually like the finger puppet even more. It's small, lightweight and easy to sink teeth & claws into. Rosie is the next best thing, and also very easy to play with.
Stinky is a bookstore cat. The last Rosie I got for her, she lost in about 2 seconds. It was my fault. In the store basement we have rows of steel shelves. Stinky was on a top shelf and I took Rosie out of the bag and wagged it at her, She snatched it out my hand, flipped it up in the air, and it went down a small space between rows of back-to-back shelves. No way to retrieve it, unless I was willing to spend hours unbolting shelves to pull one of the units out.
Now I feel like I should dig under the stove with a stick to see if any of Otto's toys are under there.

Cathy Friedmann - 11 Mar 2005 21:30 GMT > what or rather who is Rosie Rat??? It's a cat toy, a furry mouse (well, supposedly a rat), who's flat not rounded, & she has a suede head/ears & tail. She's actually very pretty. IMO. ;-)

GrapplerGurl - 12 Mar 2005 03:40 GMT $1.99 for Rosie? I pay $1.49 a pop for my mice, they don't really seem all that special though George has 17 of them hiding around the house again. Wow, I've never had a cat before, approximately how many mice would you say a cat would go through in it's lifetime? That could get really expensive.

I buy those little furry mice that rattle when you shake them, 10 at a pop. My cats (4 of them) love them. I learned a little trick a couple of years ago, and that is to "marinade" them in a jar with catnip. I just found a jar in the kitchen cabinet with a micey toy in it that's probably been there for a year now. I took it out, threw it, and my littlest, Scarlett, ran after it and when the others tried to approach she growled at them to stay back! lol!

Lesley Madigan - 14 Mar 2005 17:44 GMT I do have another question I'd like to ask,

Many years ago when Fugazi and Isis were about 3-4 years old, I saw a red catnip mouse in a petshop which I took home for them. Fugazi loved it she was a real catnip fan (Isis being a lady stood there and looked as if to say "My sister is a junkie! Oh the shame!")but once the catnip was gone she got bored of it and it vanished.
Fast forward 12 years. Fugazi had crossed the bridge 4 years before and now Isis went after her. Enter Redunzel and Sarrasine.....
And Sarrasine who is seriously into toys came in one day and we were like "What the Hell has she got there?"
"Wait a minute that's Gaz-Gaz's old mouse!"
And it was, some 11-12 years after we had last seen it, Sarrasine was playing with it! She also found the balls that we assumed were long lost (indeed they were)under a cupboard
Honest I do tidy up around the place sometimes!!!!!!

He did get sick one time from it too. Maybe your cat is eating them but is able to digest them? Or, have you tried looking under your refrigerator and stove? That's one of my cats' favorite hiding places :D
