Hi All:
I adopted 2 year old stray George, in September and
everything is going very smoothly. He's adapted well, he's the only
pet in a 1 person household and has the run of the place. He's an
indoor cat. He's a pretty affectionate little fella, very much right
out of the adoption cage. One question I have, sometimes he'll
disappear and I'll go look for him in the house and on more than one
occaision I find him under the bed. He's just kind of sitting there
watching me. Is this strange for a cat to be hiding like that? Nothing
stressed him out as there are no kids or ruckus in the house and I'm
really quiet. For some reason he spends a fair amount of time under
that bed. Could it be he has just found a place he really likes to
chill out in?

no, that is just probably his "chill" place. Now if he goes there and is not
eating or playing then you know he doesn't feel good and is trying to find
comfort by being in his "chill" place.

One of my cat Luna's zillion nicknames is "UnderTheBed"
:)
No need to worry unless George is also acting lethargic, not eating, or
just generally "out of sorts"...
there is just something about being under the bed that cats
like...probably has to do with a feeling of safety and security.

Under The Bed is the centre of the Cat Kingdom. When cats Want To Be Alone
Where No One Can Disturb Them, Under The Bed simply has every other place in
the house whipped.
I have two cats in my household, one of whom regularly decides to remind the
other that he's dominant. The one who is reminded has annexed Under The Bed
as his territory. No one or nothing can get him there, he can do what he
wants. Except, of course, for when I'm going to bed, when he always hides
Under The Bed in the hope that I'll forget to look so he can end up staying
in the room with me for the night (I'm slightly allergic to cats, so I lock
em out of the bedroom overnight).
Every now and then, when I'm really exhausted, I do forget to check, and am
woken by purring at about 3am. But the purring is instantly followed by
jumping off the bed and going to the door, as he knows that's where he's
headed.
Other times, he sits there Under The Bed, out of my reach, even though I'm
down on the ground talking to him, telling him he knows what's going to
happen now. It's not until I get the Big Stick and prod him with it that he
moves out from Under The Bed and heads straight for the door, because he
knows there's no point resisting. :-)

This whole post cracked me up.
Don't you just picture your cat sitting under the bed with a sh.t eating
grin?! The caption over his/her head would be "Under the bed?
*priceless*!!!"

*He* cracks me up. He's really funny. Sometimes when he's sitting Under The
Bed, I can reach him to scratch under his chin. But he always moves away
from my hand (unlike when he's Outside The Bed), as if he can somehow avoid
being evicted tonight as long as I don't touch him. The first time I had to
resort to the Big Stick to move him from Under The Bed, it took a *lot* of
prodding to get him to move. Now it just takes a gentle tap, and you can
almost see him thinking "Damn!"

That's EXACTLY what I pictured. :)

If he was a stray, he probably had to use hiding as part of his survival
skills. He may just feel more comfortable there at times because of his
history.
That being said, the kittens that were born in our house and were never
strays, love to sleep under the couch at times. They can spend hours
under there. Lots of cats just love little hidey-places.
