Just wondering ....... Carol

> Just wondering ....... Carol

Jasper is doing splendidly! His poops have returned to normal poops, he
is done with his antibiotics and only has a few steroids left. He's
eating like a little muncher-head. And, in addition to all this...his
breath does not STANK NO MO! I wonder if his breath will go south again
now that he is off the antibiotics. He definitely has some serious
dental disease. I want to discuss this with the vet now that he is on
the mend to see if she thinks he is stable enough to go thru a dental
cleaning. I fear that his dental disease could bring him more problems
in the future, so I am afraid to just leave it alone. But OTOH, he is
doing so well...and knowing what a "bad" patient he is at the
vet's...I'm not sure I want to put him thru the trauma of anesthesia and
all that!

I think the more important question...is...How are YOU doing, Carol?
:)

I'm glad he's doing well.  That's so wonderful.
I'm "ok" I guess.  I didn't go back to work yet.  I'm still numb and in
shock I guess.
I feel nothing.  I never got to grieve for Elvis and now I can't grieve for
my husband.
I'm just blah.  I'm sad & depressed but I can't cry, I can't get angry, I
can't do anything.
It's starting to scare me kind of.   It's just like nothing matters anymore
so why grieve.

Well, you are more than entitled to the feelings you are experiencing
that is for sure. I could say all the cliches like "stay strong" and
"hang in there" but that would just sound like empty rhetoric. I hope
that you can find an outlet for your pain and grief, whether it be more
kitties, a therapist, or both. Your current kitty and your future
kitties need you!!!!

Wishing you the BEST,
Pam

You will likely feel like that for a while then reality will come in like a
raging lion at meal time. When you're busy with details and paperwork, you
are busy so there is little if no time to think.

Give yourself time and take things one day at a time. .. there is no
schedule for this kind of thing and don't let anyone tell you there is.  I
found a book called Talking to Heaven started me on the road to recovery
after a similar experience so maybe it will help you too.

Hang in there :)

Have you made a doctor appt. for yourself?  Maybe temporary medication to
allow you to function better, or perhaps the doctor can recommend a
therapist who's good at grief - & its resultant depression - counseling?

I'm not sure is time really heals or if we just get used to the pain.  But
things do seem to get better with time.

I wish you the best.

Great! :-)

In that case his breath may go icky again.  As soon as the vet thinks it's
wise (as you mention below), I'd say to schedule a dental appt. for him.
Not for his breath, but for his health (again, as you mention below) &
further comfort.

Oh, I definitely wouldn't put him thru that torture just for the sake of
his breath. I am aware that the teeth situation is a bad one and he
deserves to have 'em looked at and cleaned up if the vet thinks its okay! :)

Oh, I didn't mean that *you* would get his teeth done simply for better
smelling breath, I just wanted to clarify that _I_ didn't mean that would be
the reason, either!

IOW - get off the computer & do some paperwork?! ;-)  I'm doing the same
thing - have corrected some papers, but have one batch to go...  There's a
winter storm warning posted here for tonight into tomorrow... so, maybe? ;-)

Bingo. I did grade a few papers...but never enough! It's like the damn
things are multiplying when I'm not paying attention!!! GRR!

:)

I wish Luna would make herself useful and GRADE some damn papers instead
of just standing on them and trying to file them!

Hmmmm... this one thing I haven't thought to ask the cats to do for me, to
earn their keep. 'Twould be nice, though! ;-)  I've asked them to please do
one load of laundry, clean the bathroom, take out the garbage, some
vacuuming... just once in a great while while I'm at work, but they always
plead 1) no opposable thumbs, & 2) that they're physically too small in
stature to accomplish any of those things.  Then they go on & tell me
they're already earning their keep by being lap cats, purring, etc., &
therefore help lower my blood pressure.  Excuses, excuses...

This is absolutely great news!

Pam, dental disease could cause more problems than you can imagine.  The
gums have a *huge* blood supply and all the bacteria involved in dental
disease can easily enter the bloodstream and cause infections in any
organs - especially the heart and kidneys.

But OTOH, he is

If the trip to the vet stresses him so much, you might want to speak to your
vet about a mild (pill) tranquilizer that you can give him at home a little
while before the trip.  Many of my ferals and shelter cats need a mild
tranq - and has made all the difference in the world!  The cats are much
more relaxed which also allows a better and more thorough exam.

Good luck.

Yes, I have been made aware of this and really would like to do
something about it! Like I said, I just hope that Jasper is well/stable
enough to go thru more stress and trauma.

Today for the first time in his 2 weeks of recovery, he seemed a little
out of sorts. He didn't eat his dinner, but when we pilled him, he DID
gobble up his chicken breast afterwards like a champ. So, I'll just be
keeping my eye on him. Still, he is a constant worry for me! Sigh... :)

I think I'd wait a bit until he's fully recovered and strong - but not too
long.  Periodontal disease often causes pain which could put him off eating
and possibly result in an aversion to food.  I went through that with a few
cats - it was a nightmare. I had to resort to nasoesophageal tube feeding to
avert hepatic lipidosis and stabilize them for anesthesia and extraction.

> Still, he is a constant worry for me! Sigh... :)

I'd give a year of my life to know what cats think when they make nervous
wrecks of us! ;->

Yes, the dental disease can be really bad.  I ended up losing my Randall
from the
heart problems the cardiologist thought came from his yukky teeth.  :(  I
never
understand why they can't just mildly sedate them to clean their teeth
instead of
giving them general anesthesia.

That totally sucks and boy does it worry me.

Jasper's breath is indeed getting stinkier again now that he is off the
antibiotics. Also, his poops are not as solid and they are VERY VERY
VERY stinky. Tim found a pile of kitty barf today but we dont know if it
is Luna's or Jasper's. Jasper is acting totally normal...eating,
moving around, drinking, spry, etc. But I plan to put a call into the
vet tomorrow and see what is up.

constantly worrying,
Pam
