Adopting a stray.. is a mistake..

I'm done.

I'm so demoralized about Henry. He's one of 20,000+ strays in my area
that I decided to take an interest in.. who would otherwise end up
euthanized in CO2 chambers at the local Humane Society.

But I f.cked up. He won't mix with our resident cats. I'm ready to
surrender him to a shelter (which means a 60% chance of being
euthanized), because his presence has totally f.cked up the lives of
the cats we've already committed to.

He's a great cat. A noble personality. A source of affection and
comfort. No doubt like many of those 20,000 kitties doomed this year.

What's the point?

How are these strays unlike the bazillion squirrels, mice or moles who
die living out their lives in the wild?

Why do I care?

Is it their anthropomorphizing binocular vision? Is it their ability
to adapt to human socialization?

Why shouldn't I just return Henry to the wild?

Are we fighting a losing battle to make sure people get their pets
fixed? Are cats and dogs simply rabbits or mice with higher brain
function?

I once loved a bug.. a ladybug that crawled into my room one night..
who no doubt died that year...

Perhaps Henry lived to teach me something. Perhaps his anonymous death
would teach us all something.

Brian, I certainly hope you just continue to find him a home. I think you
are just depressed, talking like this. Please do not put him in a shelter or
at least contact a no kill agency to work with. There must be one near you.

God i wholly agree with Karen. Henry may be reacting to your moods of
depression. Nothing deserves to be put out or down, Henry may be
thinking the same as your, why should he bother if you cant

Not sure I understand what "f.cked up" means, but. One way to
correct a disruption is to clip the claws of the aggressor.

Cats depend so heavily on their claws that having their claws
clipped puts a major dent in any aggressive behavior.

Using that method, I probably could control a significant number of
cats with various, even hostile, personalities.

Brian, what happened?  I thought there was a home lined up for him?
Where are you?  Perhaps I can help.  I'm the intake coordinator at a limited
admission shelter in NH.  If you are in New England or can get there, let me
know.  I will also be in MD visiting my parents in April.  If that's closer,
we can arrange something.

You did NOT f.ck up by loving a cat.  You had no idea how it would turn out.

Kelly,

Please check my last message under the "Interesting Henry Update..." thread.
Great progress has been made, and it is possible that a home has been found
for Henry.  If it works out, this is a couple who recently faced the
devastating loss of their beloved cat.  That is probably the reason there
was a certain amount of hesitation for adoption.  However, this would be a
great home for Henry, and I know from my own experience that the adoption of
a new cat can soothe some of the pain of losing a greatly loved companion.
It can never be a replacement, but new adoptions enabled me to look back
with joy at the good times I had with my previous pets and to look forward
to more good times with the new adoptee.

Thanks, I missed that.  I hope it works out!  Having done many adoptions
myself, I can tell you that when people have just lost a cat, they are
hesitant.  Sometimes, you don't think they were interested, but then you
will have a message when you get home about how much they love Fluffy and
can't wait to take her home.

I also think that Brian loves Henry so much and feels like he failed somehow
when really it was the dynamics that didn't work that he is depressed. I
sure hope that you all keep us updated. Megan is indeed a miracle worker
when it comes to efforts at finding families. I hope this works.

Thanks Mary - and if you read below you'll see that indeed a
breakthrough seems to have been achieved.

Louis was the first cat we'd planned for when one of our cats was
obviously headed for oblivion. Abbey died, we adopted Louis, and the
last cat, Tiger, as well as ourselves, were totally grateful.

When my mom lost our last cat, she vowed never to have a cat again.
She's been true to that promise.

I however always need a new cat. There are so many out there. If
enough of us feel the same way, we've made a major dent.
