Why do they sleep on my clothes?

My two cats have an entire large bed with comforter to sleep on.  Why,
however, do they invariably chose to sleep on whatever article of
clothing I've laid on the bed (suit jackets, sweaters, whatever)?

They want it well blessed to protect you from greeblings when you are out
and about.

Why of course because they love your stink!!!! :)
Both our cats do that. We have a huge king size bed and if I put a shirt
on the bed, Luna will invariable sit right on the shirt. Even in the
morning, when I am laying out my clothes before work, Luna likes to sit
on them for a few minutes...almost as if she is marking me for the day! :)

hee!

Because it smells like you.  Because they're contrary creatures.
Because they can.  ;-)

I think there is more to this as I have noticed many cats will lie on
anything placed on our bed, whether it be a clean towel or even just
the cats own bed. They seem to like to have a *spot* they can feel
centered on.

Yes.  It's the difference between that and the surrounding area.  They
want to be on something that feels "special."  But the smell thing also
applies, as does their contrariness and their Edmund Hillary-esqueness.

With Buddha is it anything made of paper. She is fixated. Any
kind of paper on the floor MUST be laid on.

I would ask you why there's paper on the floor, but I have quite a bit of it,
myself =/  Better homes and gardens will never photograph my home, I'm sad to
say.

Oscar likes to sit on paper, but she also rather enjoys plastic.  There's a
plastic bag that's been on the floor in the office for a few weeks -- no,
don't ask why, I'm just a slob -- and she loves to sit on it.  We also get our
groceries in "paper in plastic" (paper bag inside a plastic bag, easy to carry
and sturdy), and keep the bags in that form for trash bags.  Oscar likes to
sit on the pile of them; I wonder if she thinks she's in the ultimate catseat,
paper *and* plastic all at once.

Paper and cardboard are some of my cats favorites.  Mushkins was fixated on
an 8x11 cardboard insert from a paper box and would throw a fit if I removed
it from the kitchen floor.  Finally after many months I was able to replace
it with a wicker kitty bed without her getting so upset.

Luna is also a paper freak. When she sits on paper, she also paws at it,
and we laugh and say she is filing our papers. :) She's a good secretary.

Buddha does this, but Cheeks is a shredder! Eeek!! Good thing she
is the boss around here. ;)

My Furface sometimes insisted on laying on a pile of clean clothes.  I
would take a load of clothes from the dryer and put them on the bed to
fold them and he would get on the pile.  He would ignore the ones I
had folded, but would almost fight me when I tried to take one fron
under him to fold.

I wonder if it was the warnth he liked. My Gnarly did this, but only
with warm clothes.

Were the unfolded ones still warm - even a little bit warm - from the dryer?
Or maybe it was the fact that they were more of a tumbled pile.  Or both...

If a surface has *another* layer/surface one top of it, that's where a cat
will choose to sit or sleep.  And if the topmost surface is soft, then all
the better!

My cats have taught me to put clothes away. If dirty, put in hamper.
If it can be worn again, hang up in closet. :)  They like "beds". And
not your bed, they like "nests". :)
