Hello all. My name is Shannon. About a week or so ago my husband and I
were dropping a stray dog of at the humane society...and a lady came in
with a cat...she told the worker she could no longer keep the cat and
wanted to surrendor the cat...the worker told her he would be put down
because they had no room. Me...being the sucker :) that I am asked about
the cat....I saw that he was orange through the carrier and I have
always wanted a big male orange cat. Well wasnt I in luck? Here was the
biggest orange male Maine Coon cat I have ever seen....so I asked my
husband and now I have a new cat...mind you I am NOT a cat person...I am
a total dog person. But I am an animal lover and couldnt bear to think
this cat would be put down...so now Thomas formerly know as Tiger Lee is
here. What I need to know is this..when will he ever be part of the
family? My other 2 cats roam the house and lay around on the couches and
windowsills...not Thomas...at first he lived on top of my husbands
dresser...then he moved to the basement and he stays either on top if
the laundry folding table or a ledge by the stairs...The dogs are cool
with him and he has laid with my dogs a few times on my bed...I do have
one dog who loves him a bit to much and Thomas hates it. I feel so sorry
for him being cooped in the basement all the time. I leave the door open
so he can wander when ever he wants...he just never does. He is very
affectionate when I come to visit with him he nibbles me and purrs and
rolls on him back for belly rubs but he wont come upstairs...I am kinda
feeling like this isnt the life he deserves.
Thank You all for reading this.

To me it sounds pretty good for such a short time. I think time will
probably show more presence. Does he eat in the presence of the other cats?

He eats sometimes if my other cat is around but they still hiss and
growl a bit...not as much as before when he first got here. My one
female even stayed in the basement with him all night once and used his
litter box and ate his food...wonder if she was just trying to be
bossy...I just feel so sorry for him being down in the basement...though
its furnished and has all the usual amenties because it is our family
room...I still feel like he should be upstairs with us enjoying
life....I also wonder if he is mourning his old family.

A week isn't very long at all. He has a lot to get used to: leaving his old
home (and his icky former owners), getting used to a whole new house, new
people, new cats, new dogs. I think you are doing the right thing. He needs a
safe place to calm down and acclimate. It might take several weeks but I'm
sure he will eventually start expanding his territory little by little. Do
what you're doing and go to visit him as much as possible but don't force him
to join in. You did a very nice thing saving him from death and I think, in
time, he will reward you with love, affection, and cute antics.

Just give all the time it needs. He will eventually come around and
you will have a loving addition to you familly.

<snip> (Wants to know how long a new cat should take to acclimate to
a new home.) <snip>
The cat is fine, just getting used to everything. Let him work at his
own pace.

PS, is it just me, or does "Somons Mom"s posts show up with a black
background/white lettering to you all, too?

Yes, it does. I assume it was posted in HTML, but not sure if that is the
correct answer.

Not that anyone cares anymore, but my newsreader (Xnews) tells me that the
body of the OP's message was plain text, but the sig (starting with
"Shannon") was posted in white-on-black HTML. I've heard somewhere,
something to the effect that Outlook Express (which both of you are
apparently using) defaults to formatting entire posts from WebTV (used by
Shannon) like the sig.
