Kitty Chemo

My Kitty had a sonogram, they found 1.5cm mass in her liver..She had a
biopsy - but the sample came back as "necrotic material" - in other words -
dead cells. The vet said that it could be cancer, with the dead cells
around it.

The biopsy report speculated that the liver lobe had "twisted", cutting off
oxygen..But the vet said that if a lobe had twisted I would have one sick
cat.

Took the cat to the vet this past Saturday for a quartizone shot -worked
great. Kitty has been eating well since then, I sit next to her and watch
her gobble food. Then when she stops..I play with the food a bit with a
fork to "freshen" it up - then she eats more. She really responds to fresh
food!!

The vet said that quartizone can shrink tumors, make the cat feel better,
and it's also used in conjuction with chemo anyway. He said that cats do
not respond well to liver surgery..and I really really do not want to do
surgery..

We're going to continue on quartizone every two weeks as long as she
responds well, which she has. If she has another biopsy and it is cancer -
what does chemotherapy involve..Is it in pill form that I can give at
home..Or does she have to go in every day for a week??

thanks
David

David, I don't know the answer to this but I just wanted to say
that I hope for the very best outcome for you and your kitty, and
it is wonderful to see you take such good care of her. Phil and others
have said that cats respond very well to Chemo, better than humans.
Good luck.

How much did that cost?  I've never heard of such a thing.  Had to set you
back a grand or more...

I hope your cat gets better, and soon, by the way.

My cat had a liver sonogram & needle biospy in '98, & at that time it (the 2
procedures) cost $250.  That included the complete exam & muscle relaxant,
prior to the sonogram & biopsy.

Even a human ultrasound isn't THAT much.

Sonogram is ultrasound (US).  It is a relatively inexpensive procedure.
($150.00+)

Chemo can, not US.

Ditto.

I've only briefly discussed chemo for a cat w/ my vet, several years ago.
Briefly, because the discussion was in advance of the diagnosis.  I got the
impression that it would have been in pill form, that I would administer at
home.  However, I assume there are different protocols - that it's not one
standard treatment plan for all.

Alos, from what my vet told me, form what I've read, & from anecdotal stuff,
cats (& dogs) tolerate chemo much, much better than humans do, re: adverse
effects.

<snip>

I'd take the cat to a feline specialist.  Some cats do fine with liver
surgery.  I wouldn't subject my cat to chemo unless I knew it was truly
cancer (and the type of cancer, at that!) - the vet can do a
fine-needle aspirate and find out what kind of cancer it is.  Chemo is
given via IV injection - on a regular schedule (usually weekly, or
twice weekly).  Some types of feline cancer respond well to chemo,
others don't.  That's why it's pretty important to get a good
diagnosis.

Good luck,
-L.
