Ok, so I have three cats maybe six or seven months old. They've been
using the litter box with almost no problems for quite some time now.
During the past week one or more of the cats have been using the small
area of carpet behind my recliner. How can I teach them this is bad?
They'll only do it when I'm not around.
Please help!

First things first: get a couple more litter boxes and keep them really
clean.

You need to have them checked for a urinary infection. Make sure you have at
least two boxes available. Use an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle
(multiple times if necessary) to clean the spot. Are the cats spay/neutered?
If not, that is probably the problem, get them fixed ASAP.

Hi,
You need to get to the root of the problem rather than just teach
your cats they are "bad" . They're not really being bad. If they are
weeing rather than spraying , it could be they are avoiding the box
because another cat has used it or one of the cats is blocking
another's access.
Anther reason is the cat/s has cystitis.
To start with you'll need to provide more litter boxes in different
locations, and clean up the carpet as directed in this article
http://www.apbc.org.uk/article10.htm
Another point is have the cats been neutered?

As much as my roomates are procrastinating on neutering the cats
(Believe me I remind them everyday... grr) I am trying to reclaim my
living room from the odors. I went out and bought an enzyme cleaner and
SOAKED the area and let it dry with a window open. Then I put two
plastic mats, the kind you'd put in your car down on top of the area. I
also got a little bag with "crystals" that neutralize pet odors.
We'll see what happens. I'm assuming if they go #2 it isn't a problem
with not being neutered is this correct to assume?
