Post-spaying discomfort

Hello All,

We took Dharma to the vet for spaying on Friday morning and she stayed
overnight. We picked her up on Saturday afternoon and were instructed to
keep the Victorian collar on her for 14 days until the stitches are
removed along with administering the antibiotics/pain meds. She's just a
little-bit of a thing--6lbs 4oz.

She seems so uncomfortable with it on; going poop and peeing seems
difficult as she can't see the litter box. Each time I remove the
collar, she tampers with the stitches!

Is there anyway that I can make her more comfortable for the next 12
days and help her make her toilet habits a little more "on target"?!

Any suggestions will be most gratefully received!

I honestly have never heard of giving an elizabethan collar for a spay,
unless the cat is really biting at her stitches.  I've had lots of cats
spayed and never had an E collar on any of them.

I wonder if the vet noticed that she was bothering her stitches.

Wow. Never heard of having to keep it on that long. If she is too fussy with
the stitches, you could see if you can get a clear collar so she can see
what she is doing.

Petco carries the clear collars in their store.  If you have one close buy
you could get her one of these so she can see where she's going.

Speak to your vet about using an infant pajama top or shirt for a few hours
a day - I've even used a woman's leg warmer cut down.   If she handles it
well and doesn't gnaw thru it, perhaps he'll give you the ok to lose the E
collar after a few days.

Good luck,

Phil
