The Cat Dancer is a very popular toy in this group, in case anyone
doesn't already know.
Has anyone's cat lost interest in the cat dancer before it wore out?
I just bought some. My male cat Kitty played with one immediately and
then fell asleep. Unless the tightly rolled paper is soaked in
catnip, it should be very easy to make that toy and variants. I
suspect (as my neighbor suggested) the fun comes from the fact that
the hard, long wire moves in less predictable ways than most other
things, and yet the cat has some effect on how it moves.
Has anyone tried replacing the rolled up paper with other things? Its
lightness might be an important property.
Does anyone know when the Cat Dancer first arrived on the market? In
other words, how long ago did you first buy one?

Um, no. :)
I occassionally put mine away for a week or so, and then take it out
again. One time Peewee saw me take it out of the drawer when it had
been put away for a long time and he exclaimed with wide-eyes "Mama!"
LOL...
They have been on the market since at least 1984 or so...maybe before.
I was first recommended them by an old boss at that time.
Glad your kitty likes it- personally I think it's the best cat toy ever
invented!

I leave mine out for a while. Found out that they can't really hurt
themselves with it, so why not? Watched one of mine batting at one end of
it, and the other end wiggled and bopped him in the behind - he jumped up
about 1-2 feet into the air! Silly cat. Another time I was holding one
end, and the loose end was wobbling lazily back & forth after one cat
attempted to 'catch' it - and was sitting up in 'meerkat' poses, bobbing and
weaving trying to follow it's path.

Nope. But then I usually put it away in-between uses. Btw - I don't know
if they ever wear out - including the little cardboard-y ends!

Hmmm... maybe 10 years ago? Give or take a couple of years?? Not sure, but
it's definitely been a while.

Rotate the toys. Cats will get bored with almost any toy after awhile.

Hodge has a fleece snowman that is going on three years old that he just
will not give up. It's chewed, drooled on, dirty, etc., but he goes to
it time after time, and even sleeps with his head on it. He's rejected
newer toys in favour of it.
He also really likes the Enchantacat pineapple, which I first got at
Dogma and Catmantoo in Ann Arbor (Kerrytown).

I just had to check the link, to see what an Enchantacat pineapple looked
like! ;-)

No, it's a special edition snowman, very plain, from
http://www.westpawdesign.com/
He has other fleece toys from them, but seems to like the snowman shape.

Mico is a one and a half year old Siamese. When he was a kitten, I would
regularly bring it out, and he loved it. Now, when I bring it out, he plays
with it for about five minutes, then walks away. I use it rarely now, maybe
once every couple of months.
